Album Notes
Joyliner, the not-so-random biography. Band formed in France by mostly French guys – nobody is really fully French in France, right ? Two guitars, bass, drums. When ? 1998. Where ? Paris, the city of lights but with so few good venues for start-up bands – and not much appetite for French rock bands that sing in English. Oh well, not in it for the money, but « pour la beauté du geste » as they say. For their and your pure listening pleasure, a trip in the valleys and summits, up the creeks and down the well of the unchartered territory of rock music. Inspirations oscillate between true indie rock (Posies, Sugar, Guided by Voices, Pavement) anywhere between the extremes (Jason Falkner if you like melodic pop, Shellac if you like the driest form of rock, the Grifters if rock is even mildly about self-destruction) Hey ! no European influences ??? Oh yes, Soft Boys a while ago (remember Robyn Hitchcock ?) Clash, and more recently, the Belgian wonders : dEUS, Sharko (check them out). Something about how the joyliner music has been created and brought to here, over the years : always recorded at Black Box Studio in France (Peter Deimel is our jedi-master producer), the temple of analog recording and vintage amps and microphones (S. Albini recorded there a few times), mastered in France’s best (La Source). Lyrics : More or less badly disturbed love meets distorted perceptions of its surroundings.
Impromptu translantion of a recent review of N.A.I.L. : « Joyliner is a rock band, its music painted sometimes in pop sometimes in punk, a sign that the band is keen on what indie rock is all about, ever since it’s been around, some ten years ago… solid rhythms lead to choruses that stick in your head… let yourself be invaded by ‘permafrost’, ‘layers’ or ‘stockholm syndrome’ …
