Album Notes
These songs, simply put, are melodies from my heart and soul. I call them “heartsongs” because at the time I wrote each one, it evoked a unique emotion from a place deep within me – emotions and feelings that I didn’t even know I was harboring. At turns, these are my expressions of love, longing, hope, sorrow, doubt, joy, wonder…… emotions we all feel and own, but may have difficulty realizing and expressing with words. Yet, many of the songs are vocal in essence, with the cello and its voice-like quality, the singer of the melody. I hope that my music might touch your soul and help express your heart’s song, and the quiet beauty within.

The Music:

New Day
When the first glow of dawn lights the sky, there is a feeling of rejuvenation and newness. This song touches that thread of emotion – a fresh beginning, a new chance, a tranquil awakening to new hope and promise..… it’s a new day.

Breeze In G
This song is dedicated to my Mother. Mom loved music – particularly graceful melodies that linger in the air as if carried on a gentle breeze, and music that hinted an Irish lilt. Before each of my symphony concerts, which she and Dad always faithfully attended, she would ask me if the music on the program was going to be “pretty”. With love, this “pretty” and gentle song is for my Mom.

I Wonder…..
It asks a question, and at the same time states a point of marvel and hopeful anticipation. I wonder if…. I wonder who…. I wonder when….I wonder …..…..

Quiet Beauty
A song that speaks to the depth of beauty….the beauty to be found in a gentle touch, a wisdom shared through the eyes, a kind heart……a deep inherent eloquence. Beauty that is subtle and unique, and the foundation of love….the Quiet Beauty within.

Shadows of My Mind
Shadows and the complexities of shade and light - reflective of the complexities of our emotions and thoughts. The shadows engage in an intertwining dance until arriving at a time and place of clarity, accord and ultimate serenity - a quiet and peaceful resolution to the shadow dance of the mind.

Esperance (Hope)
This song is dedicated to my Father. Dad had a great spirit of hope and faith, and maintained such a quiet courage about him that I will always remember and admire. With love, this song is for my Dad.

Lost in deep thought and introspection. As if wandering through a heavy mist, trying to find one’s bearings. There is an air of uncertainty and mystery..….why I named this song “Mistique”.

Solitude – feeling its quiet comfort, yet also its seclusion and melancholy.

A waltz with a gently twirling melody, winding and turning from major to minor, and then unraveling itself with whimsical flair.

A CD that lives up to its name!
I don’t think there is a more soul-stirring combination of musical instruments than piano and cello, and the duo of James Todd (cellos) and William Morse (piano) really underscores that point. Both artists are music professors with lifetimes devoted to music. A seasoned studio and freelance musician in many genres of music, this is James Todd’s first album of original compositions (for two cellos and piano), and I have my fingers crossed that it will be the beginning of a long series. I hesitate to refer to much contemporary music as classical, but “Quiet Beauty” would certainly fall into that category, blended with the new age approach to soothing, relaxing music to calm the mind and refresh the spirit. Subtitled “Heartsongs for Cello and Piano,” each of the ten pieces is an exquisite gem that expresses a deeply-felt emotion. The pace of the entire CD is consistent enough to hold a steady mood, but the pieces are individual and deceptively complex, allowing for many deep listens without a loss of interest. My only warning is that this is a difficult CD to wake up with - I kept snuggling down in the covers with a smile on my face and going back to sleep!

“Quiet Beauty” begins with the gorgeous “New Day,” a piece full of the hope and optimism of a fresh start. The gentle, leisurely tempo of the piece evokes sighs and thoughts of, “Oh, that’s nice!” “Breeze in G” is a sweet breath of springtime. Dedicated to Todd’s mother who always asked before his symphony performances if the music was going to be pretty, this piece exceeds “pretty” by a long shot. “I Wonder” is a musical daydream - warm and cozy, with gentle anticipation. The title track appears as an ensemble piece and also closes the CD as a piano solo. Expressing the inherent eloquence and depth of beauty, especially the “Quiet Beauty” within each of us, this piece has the power to melt the most hardened of hearts. “Shadows of My Mind” is a graceful dance of emotions that come together at the end, bringing a peaceful resolution to the complexities of the shadows of the mind. If I had to choose my favorite piece on this album, it would probably be “Esperance (Hope),” a piece dedicated to Todd’s father. Strong yet tender and sensitive, it’s a wonderful tribute. I also really love “Mistique,” which is a bit darker, reflecting on being lost in thought and introspection, “as though wandering through a heavy mist trying to find ones bearings.” The solo piano arrangement of “Quiet Beauty” is the perfect ending for this exceptional album.

“Quiet Beauty” is an album that truly lives up to its title. Sure to become a classic. You won’t be disappointed!

Quiet Beauty
This CD became my favorite among favorites after listening to it the very first time. The shear passion from the instrument flows not to the ear of the listener, but straight to one's soul. A truly amazing, emotional listening experience.

soothing, almost too beautiful
Quiet Beauty is just what you'll get when you play this cd. The cello is soothingly beautiful and expertly played. Each piece flows with its own long ago, far away and deeply spiritual presence. If you love pretty melodies and the dance between cello and piano, then this recording is for you. It transforms you to a place that is true and quiet and beautiful. I could listen forever...
