ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I grew up in the seventies, when you could turn on the radio and hear the Eagles, the Carpenters or Linda Ronstadt singing "Desperado," when genre divisions between rock and country and pop and folk became blessedly meaningless. I stumbled upon a country AM station, WHN, there in northern New Jersey, and became a diehard fan of Tanya Tucker during her teen years, and Waylon and Willie and Dolly and Loretta, and Merle and Tom T. Hall . . . country music gave me a window onto the rest of America, outside of the greater New York area. I'm an unlikely person to be writing this music, I know, but I figure I'll just make that my shtick and laugh along with the rest of you . . . I'm getting some songs published in Nashville now, and I go there a lot; I've gotten some indie cuts and I dream of getting major label cuts. But meanwhile, I thought I'd put some of my songs out there, the way I sing them and hear them in my head and heart. I'm proud that a song of mine was a winner in Artists For Literacy's "Songs Inspired by Literature" contest in 2004 and will be on one of their CDs. Stop by my website sometime and say hello!

Lovely music, exceedingly clever lyrics
These lyrics will leave you giggling and chortling. A clever turn around every bend. And Klass' voice takes us through a variety of moods - from cynical to sweet to celebratory to raunchy. A wonderful CD to listen to over and over and over again.

Bona-fide country from Brooklyn!
Judy Klass,"Brooklyn Cowgirl" (Warp & Woof)
Hot damn! Who woulda thunk a bona-fide classic country album would come from a “Brooklyn Cowgirl”? Judy Klass delivers a country magnus-opus of no less than eighteen (!) songs on this release, with nary a bad song in the bunch. From classic country tear-jerkers to boot-skooting boogies, this album is so strong I just believe it could turn even the most skeptical music fan into a country fan. There are no less than three classics on this disc: “Drunk On One Corona”, “Sex With Your Ex” and “Elvis Lives”. Judy Klass has the talent so spread the word!

Great album! Great down home country sound!
Great album to make you smile at every listen from one of the best newly discovered singer/songwriters. Insightful lyrics and great down home country band fills in the musical landscape to help keep your feet tappin'. I saw her perform at the Bluebird in January and I can't wait to see her next concert!

A true talent,,,
Intelligently written, poetic and honestly delivered. Judy's songs echo a time of gentle voices and gifted story telling and could easily share a stage with the likes of...Judy Collins,Joan Biaz or Carol King. These are songs to be proud of, truely. I enjoyed the bio as well ..I think you and I are one of the few who wrote them in first person... I found that very refreshing! There is a humility and great sense of self both in your bio and your music that is quite captivating. Thank you for sharing your music..best of luck in all your endeavors.

Good country
Judy Klass: Brooklyn Cowgirl
Genre: Country / Artist Site: www.judyklass.com / Rating by Kangar Radio: *****

From its opening track “Drunk on one Corona” to “Rescue Me” Judy Klass is in a Klass by herself playing good ole country music. It’s rare to hear today such a great voice with such good backing music in the Country scene. This is not new country this is the real deal country the way it should be played. If you’re a lover of K.D or Reba this is a must have in your country collection.

Two different Americas meet
To this Brit’s ears, Brooklyn Cowgirl is a bridge between two of America's most fabulous subcultures, marrying the emotional forthrightness of country music with a wit and
wordplay that is utterly New York. The Grand Ol'Opry
rubs shoulders with the Algonquin Hotel; Dorothy
Parker steps out in rhinestones.

The songs run up and down the register from lyrical to
foot-stomping. They are heartfelt, true and funny -
and as sharp as the lime wedge in the neck of a bottle
of Corona.

Country music to tempt country novices
OK I am not usually a fan of country music, but I kind of fell for this CD when I heard the first song. Not only are the lyrics clever ("Now she's become her own cheap date/Now she's drunk on Corona/and it seems a fittin' fate") but the melody is catchy and cute. Your typical country song, though the sort you'd hear in a dive bar in a small town, not the kind Shania Twain sings.

Just look at the song titles and you get the idea. I mean, "Havin' Sex With your Ex"? Funny, no? Well, that's actually a pretty sounding ballad, which shows Klass' vocal skill.

"You Didn't Think" also showcases Klass' voice, though it's darker and smokier here and is really nice, matching the music perfectly. This is a true honky-tonk song.

The liner notes are hilarious. She gives a little description of each song and as her lyrics can attest, she is very witty. Judy Klass reminds me of a country version of Christine Lavin. There is a bit of humor, but also a sweet sensitivity and honesty.

I have to say if all country music were like this I might actually listen to it more often. So I guess there's a little country in me after all.

Stand out songs: "Alternate Universe" (not very country, in comparison), "He Done Her Wrong" (couldn't be more country-twangy but is quite loveable-which is high praise coming from me).

Classic sounding country swing/rock ...very good and clever songwriting
Her voice is strong and good and very convincing with the material she has chosen to present to us on this disc. It is definitely more a Nashville sound, and the references are more from that locale than from the land further west where the cowboys and cowgirls frolic. She has a very sharp wit and some of the songs have good insights into common problems no matter the locale, Sex With Your Ex, and He Done Her Wrong, stand out. She is someone to take note of because the songs are so good.
