From the dazzling dueling virtuosity of Lanzetti and Berteau, to the outrageous extended techniques of Martin, to the stylistic metamorphosis of Barrière, Ms. Soltis casts new light on a moment lost in time—when an emergent generation of cellist-composers burst onto the scene with an explosion of innovation and experimentation unprecedented in the history of the cello in France.
