ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Acclaimed cellist Juliana Soltis breaks with 200 years of tradition to revive the long-lost practice of spontaneous improvisation in J.S. Bach’s beloved Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello

The follow-up to her acclaimed debut, Entrez, le Diable!, which explored the controversial rise of the cello as a solo instrument in 18th-century France, Going Off Script: The Ornamented Suites for Cello releases as the inaugural offering under the historically-informed performance specialist’s own King Street Records label. Performed entirely on historical instruments, including the rarely-heard 5-string violoncello piccolo, these are the Bach cello suites – fresh, vital, living works of art – as they have not been played in centuries.

A note from the performer:

“Bach’s music is beloved by so many people—inspiring everyone from Mozart to Casals—and yet what few realize is that Bach’s music is incomplete. He left spaces behind for the performer to finish the process of composition, and this process—this act of composition sitting at the instrument—is what we call ornamentation. The idea of adding anything to Bach might seem sacrilegious, but the effect of these spontaneous improvisations is to create something wondrously singular: these Suites were never meant to be museum pieces, but rather living works of art. The experience of recording the Suites this way, of reclaiming Bach’s music in all its fullness and immediacy, has easily been the most challenging and transformative of my career, and I hope that this album will help to ignite a whole new conversation about Bach’s music and its importance in our lives in the 21st-century.”

Praise for Juliana Soltis' acclaimed debut, Entrez, le Diable!: The Virtuoso Cello at the Concert Spirituel:

“Soltis is a clear virtuoso; the recording is beyond criticism. A stunning release.”
Colin Clarke, Classical Music

“Any cellist who thinks Baroque sonatas are easy or unimaginative should definitely check out this CD.”
Sarah Freiburg, Strings Magazine

“fierce displays of technique and impassioned rhetoric...The intrepid Soltis hurls herself into all of the music, producing gritty sounds and explosive passagework when she isn’t caressing lines with poetic grace.”
Donald Rosenberg, Gramophone

“These are virtuoso vehicles that play to Soltis’ strengths: her effortless agility, her control in all registers, and her ability to imbue even the wispiest sonorities with definition and purpose...an intelligently put together program that baroque cello fans will savor.”
Jed Distler, ClassicsToday.com
