Album Notes
With the release of his debut CD, "Emergence", saxophonist/composer Julian Meyers is inviting listeners to move to the next level of his jazz odyssey.

After more than 10 years as a sideman and leader of several successful jazz ensembles, Meyers is ready to broaden his following.

Meyers pays tribute to jazz greats such as the late Joe Henderson, on "Emergence" with an original composition entitled, "Farewell to Joe," and also shows his own jazz voice with five other original compositions on the CD.

"Emergence" features other prominent musicians such as: Bob Cunningham, Ed Stoute, Antonio Jacobs, a.k.a. Black Lieder, John Dooley, Kenny Austin, Walter "Baby Sweets" Perkins, Weldon Irvine, and bassist Thomas Ware Gooding (the even more talented brother of Cuba).

As a leader of several jazz ensembles, including the current Julian Meyers Quartet, this saxophonist and educator has headlined at many of New York City's best known jazz clubs including Triad, the world famous Birdland, Windows Over Harlem and Mo Bay.

Meyers, a native New Yorker, has performed with numerous renowned musicians including Michael Raye, Valerie Capers, Sweet Georgia Brown and Dizzy Gillespie. In addition, Meyers has had the opportunity to record with pianist Charles Carrington, and superstar Korean musicians Hahn Dae Soo and Woo Chang Lee, and Gang Starr's Guru.

Meyers is a graduate of Mannes College of Music in New York City, where he received his bachelor's degree in Jazz and Commercial Music. He continues to break new ground as a music educator in New York City's public school system.

The sound of Meyers' saxophone can shift gears from the spiritual to the sensual to the experimental. "Emergence" is the first step in a jazz odyssey for Meyers. Accept his invitation and come along on the journey. Stay tuned, there's much more to come.

Such smooth rhythms of jazz, can do nothing but comfort the soul.
I listened to each piece on this CD and found not one that did not have such a soothing vibe, that I wanted more! I love to listen to it on long drives, at bedtime, or just relaxing after a busy day. I found Julian Meyers' music comforting and insightful. Emergence is jazz at its' best.

LA Jazz lover

Heard this NY saxophonist jam in LA and he was great.
I had the surprising pleasure of hearing Julian jamming at the World Stage in LA and he was fantastic. I went right home and bought the CD and now I can keep on listening to him even though he's back in NY.

I thoroughly enjoy this cd! Not many people can tackle "In a Sentimental Mood" and make it an original, not just a cover. Julian adds his own style and finesse to every song and I particularly am fond of "Love Grows" and "Moment of Reflection". I truly look forward to more music in the future. For true jazz lovers, this cd is a must-have!

A stellar debut from a new and emerging jazz star on the horizon that will leave
The living giants of jazz of a yesterday’s generation are passing the torch of sound to a new generation of torch bearing musicians. Such is the case with the harmonious debut of “Emergence” by Julian Meyers, the newest jazz star on the horizon. Mr. Meyers is a truly gifted young artist with an old soul whose musical talent certainly has so much promise for the future. His music speaks for itself. As he plays his alto saxophone, you will hear a tone that is so pure, a tone that is so soft, and a tone that is so sensual. Mr. Meyers represents a musical talent that is accentuated with so many other talented musicians who collaborated in this worthwhile musical gem. As you will listen to familiar songs and original compositions, you will hear the influences of Joe Henderson, Illinois Jacquet and Dexter Gordon.

In his musical offerings, Mr. Meyers gives a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy. The opening cut “Farewell to Joe” is a tribute to Joe Henderson. The tone of CD is set with an upbeat sound. Mr. Meyer’s masterful technique is so reminiscent of Mr. Henderson’s effortless sound and style, that you can get lost in that easy breezy sound so familiar to the late 60s and early 70s. For a younger generation, if you happen to see an episode of the syndicated television program “The Cosby Show” from the late 80s and early 90s, you too will also hear that easy and light influence of Joe Henderson’s music. What I also enjoyed about this cut, was the sound of Weldon Irvine’s playing the piano, which reminded me of a beautiful stream running over smooth and rounded pebble stones, somewhere in a beautifully green and lush forest, as he tickles the ivory with masterful hands.

Another favorite on this CD is “He Is Lord”, a traditional spiritual that will restore your soul when you find yourself lost in this weary world. With the melodic and peaceful accompaniment by Barbara DeBarry on piano and Carl McDaniel on guitar, the song welcomes you into that familiar feeling of growing up in a southern Baptist church, where you will feel safe, where you will feel loved; like being wrapped up in the warmth of a hug from Big Mama, when you go to her house for Sunday Dinner.

But my all time favorite from this debut CD is the Duke Ellington standard “In a Sentimental Mood”. When I think of Duke Ellington, the word “sophistication” always comes to mind. I envision a time, in my mind’s eye, when people dressed to the nines for the evening; men in top hats and tails and women in pearls and ermine. What I really enjoyed about this arrangement is that Mr. Meyers, along with Ed Stoute on piano and Bob Cunningham on bass, evoke that level of sophistication in this beautifully dark and melancholic song that has me longing for a by-gone era.

Certainly, Julian Meyers has arrived with his own unique playing style. I think you too will enjoy this rare gem of pure solid jazz with a nod to the past. With his original compositions and interpretations of classic standards, you will find “Emergence” to be a soothing, sensual and spiritual journey for your listening pleasure.

Very soothing!
Hi Mr. Meyers Just a quick note to let you know how much Timothy and I love your CD. I have to ask the Timster to borrow it when I want to listen. He keeps it in his discman up on his top bunk and often falls asleep with it playing. Thank you. It is a nice treat to have and especially to have a 2nd grader "into" jazz!
