Album Notes
"Julie has a real electricity - a personal magnetism and electricity when she performs."

- Stan Engebretson, Conductor, National Philharmonic Chorale

Julie Keim began her versatile musical career studying piano at age 6. She began performing in musical theater at age 10, and went on to study singing at university. While in rehearsal for an opera production in college, she was cast in a cabaret show featuring music by Harold Arlen and found herself singing Mozart by day, and "moonlighting" singing jazz at night.

An accomplished classical soprano, Julie has been praised for "the purity and impressive suppleness of her voice" (The Washington Post), and her "luminous confidence and superb sound" (The New Mexican). She has performed in a variety of venues including the Kennedy Center, the White House, Washington National Cathedral, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.

I first knew Julie's work as an accomplished classical singer, so her CD, "Only Yesterday," came as quite a surprise to me, but it is quite extraodinary. I recommend it to anyone who likes the old pop standards. Julie is an unusual artist -- a classical singer with an unerring instinct for Gershwin, Berlin, Ellington, and Carmichael. I know there are lots of classical singers recording this repertoire nowadays, but I haven't heard anybody whose efforts in this direction come close to Julie's.

In other words, it doesn't sound like a classical singer "slumming." It sounds like a great singer pouring heart and soul into great songs.

The most honest and elegant recording I've heard in years!
This is a really wonderful and nicely programmed collection of truly great American music. The performances are profoundly direct, honest and intimate -- straight to the heart of this music! The sound is clear and the production first rate. I can't recommend this CD highly enough. It stays in my CD players far more often than in the jewel case! More, please!!

Lovely and pleasant listening.... definitely worth getting!
Nice to hear these old songs breathing with new life. The sound recording is even and very clean. The band is tight but plays with great ease. Too bad there aren't more tracks, but I can't wait for a follow-up to this very fine first effort. Definitely worth getting!

Songs the way they were meant to be sung!
This is a wonderful playlist of classic popular songs. The recorded sound is crystal clear with great warmth. Kudos to the engineers and producer, as well as the fine accompanying musicians. Talk about some great ensemble playing! Julie's renditions really are the way these songs were meant to be sung, cleanly and without overt affectation. Thank you for such a pleasant listening experience.

Craig Smith - The New Mexican

Make that a dry martini . . .
Keim is a singer who can move between styles without over fulsome swooping or false condescension. Her sound is clear and lovely, and she tastes the words in her mind as she forms them, so meaning is as upfront as melody. Granted, her take on this material is a bit more poised and "straight" than some jazz or popular aficionados might like; but this dry-martini, concert-in-a-supper-club approach is as effective in its way as the bitter, rock-of-ages inflections a heftier, lower voice might deliver.

. . . All in all, this is a satisfying album, just right to listen to as the evening shadows fall.

Make that a very dry martini.
