Album Notes
The idea for naming this CD " 5 4 3 2 1 " comes from a 1961 Benny Golson LP , " Take a number from 1 to 10 ". That recording starts with a solo sax piece, then each cut grows in musicians - duo, trio, quartet etc...up to a dectet. This recording starts with quintet material and then subtracts and changes instrumentation ending with a solo sax ballad. There are a great variety of tunes on the CD - some originals ( latin jazz and swinging instrumentals ) , some standards that have been arranged by jazz legends Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson , some Thelonious Monk tunes ( one of my favorite jazz composers ). The vocals on this CD are sung in a swinging style with gusto ! ( Carmen McRae and Etta Jones being two of my favorite singers ) I have been lucky to play with some of Chicago's finest musicians ! " 5 4 3 2 1 " features - Pete Benson on Hammond B3 organ; Todd Howell on drums; Steve Berry on trombone; Larry Bowen on trumpet; Mike Schlick on drums; Dan Delorenzo on bass. I'm playing alto, tenor and bari saxes and singing. If you enjoy straight ahead swinging jazz music, this is a recording for you !! Enjoy ! Thanks, Juli Wood
