Album Notes
Some tales of Persephone and the pomegranate blame the taste of a seed for Persephone's need to return each year to the Underworld. I prefer those stories I have heard in which each seed contains a memory of life, as a gift from her mother Demeter to survive her time in Hades. So this album is an instrumental story about those things which help us survive the harsh chill of Winter.

A Prelude: Hades- the sound of a bowed double bass and waterphone set in a just intonation scale devised by Giuseppe Tartini. (1, 9/8, 6/5, 45/32, 3/2, 8/5, 15/8, 2)

Ani-la- meaning "auntie" in Tibetan, is an honorific title for Buddhist nuns. This is προσκαρτέρησις, a seed of Devotion. The sound of a grand piano is set to the hirajoshi scale, a pentatonic scale contained with the Tartini that preceded it. (1, 9/8, 6/5, 3/2, 8/5, 2) For Mavis.

Blackbird's Visitors- refers to the mediaeval composer, poet, and gourmand, Abu l-Hasan ‘Ali Ibn Nafi‘ (789-857), also known as Ziryab, meaning blackbird. He is said to have brought to Spain from the Middle East the instruments that would later develop into the lute and guitar. He learned music at night from the Djinn who would visit him in his dreams, including the mode which has continued to this day in the form of flamenco music. I use the sound of voices and winds in a Pythagorean tuning of the Phrygian mode to catch a glimpse of what Ziryab may have heard. This is the seed of μουσόπνευστος. inspiration.

Ex Machina- uses the naturally and mathematically occurring notes of overtone scales to tell the story of plants flowering through the steady mechanisms of a bell-tower. This seed is προσαρμογή, adaptation.

Interlude: December Daylight- is the short but unexpectedly bright light of a Winter's Day. For Catherine S-B.

Okeanides' Garden- the place where Persephone was known to play before being taken to the Underworld, is here created from the sound of a Balinese gamelan reflecting and oscillating beneath the waves in the sunaren mode of the pelog scale. μαντεία is the seed of intuition and divination.

Oneironautical- refers to those who sail the world of the seed of ὄνειροι, dreams and the creatures that bring them. The Ukrainian minor scale brings us to a seaside carnival of the sleeping mind, with old pianos, steamy calliopes, and moving harp-strings that wander off as voices of their own.

Peace-Tied Blade- inspired by Vangelis's music for Bladerunner, this last seed- ἐλπίς, Hope- imagines a possible future in which we might live in the present. In memoriam for James.
