by Kaat van Vlaanderen

Debut album warm-voiced Dutch female singer-songwriter. Melancholic, introspective down-tempo songs with captivating and timeless melodies. Bittersweet moodsongs and -ballads mostly about love and relationships. Sometimes with a little irony.

Album Notes
It all began in spring 2006, though i’m sure the seeds were planted much earlier.
Not long after the passing of my father, followed after a long, intense, emotional and loving period, I felt
a need to write. And then I took my old spanish dusty guitar that I hadn’t touched in years.
I did have a few guitarlessons in my teens but quitted and never got further than few chords.
Yes, a few things in life I do regret, but only a few!

And then there was a song, and many more followed. And hopefully many more will.
Writing music and singing became a new passion of mine, next to my work as visual artist (mostly oil paintings, digital photography and commissioned portaitpaintings). Feel free to visit me at www.kaatwaterschoot.nl

Music has always been a big part of my life, as a listener, and, long time ago on few occasions,
as a singer. When I started writing I never had the intention to start a new career in music, let alone sing the songs myself. That has changed, also due to the support of my closest friends and professional musicians who motivated me to go sing the songs myself and get them out there.

So here they are, a selection of 13 songs, in co-production with Gabriël Peeters, producer and multi-instrumentalist.
I recorded my basic voice and acoustic and electric guitartracks alone, in my home in Maastricht, in the silent, snowy winternights. All additional heartfelt contributions were done in Uncle Gabe's Studio by these wonderful professional artists: Gabriel Peeters(drums, percussion, bass, double bass, keys), BJ Baartmans(electric guitar, slide guitar), Marie-José Didderen(Cello), Alex Akela(violins), Carlo Nardozza(trumpet).
The artwork of the physical album is self-designed, and comes in a beautiful frosted digipack, with a gloss overlay on the title, together with a booklet containing lyrics, pictures and additional info.

Almost all of my songs are drawn upon personal experiences in daily life, mostly relationships, and often from those regarding to ‘love’. A well of beauty, to drink from...and to drown in!..ai!
I also get inspired by the beauty of nature, and by cinematic movie-tracks and soundscapes
And then there's all the artists that enrich the planet with their music and touch people's hearts. To name just a few who touch my heart, my heroes: Leonard Cohen, Janis Ian, Mary Gauthier, Randy Newman, Eva Cassidy, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, John Mayer, Dayna Kurtz..

I feel fortunate and so grateful to have been given the opportunity to record my first album 'Snowdog', referring to my lovely dog that I consider my 'rescuedog' in bringing so much more love and joy into my life for twelve years now. To me the title is also a metaphor to salvation and liberation, coming from a dark cold place into the warm light, on a road to personal freedom.
And, since the recordings took place in a winter covered with loads of snow, well, here you go.

My dream and focus is to keep recording, experimenting on different sounds and arrangements and eventually tour the theaters with my own band, that i am forming as i speak.

Hope you can in some way soul-mate with with my music and you enjoy listening.
