Fertile Girl

by Kami Nixon

On the country side of rock & roll, or the rock/indie side of country, Kami cut her teeth to Willie Nelson and Hank Sr, and it shows; but she's an indie songwriter playing with rocker Bill Spooner, and that shows too.

Album Notes
On the country side of rock and roll, Kami Nixon cut her teeth on Willie Nelson and Hank Sr., and it shows. She's also an indie songwriter who plays with rocker Bill Spooner and that shows too. These songs showcase her voice (which has been described as "breathy" and "modern") and her humorous-yet-poignant, right-on-the-money songwriting talent. She plays guitar, flute and hand drum on this record, and Bill plays nearly everything else. Boone Spooner lends his amazing percussion abilities. So, it's great, original music, that might feel a bit familiar. After all, when an artist's influences include Johnny Cash and John Denver, there's going to be a quality to the music that just feels right. And this does.
Kami's song "Plans," on her EP "Boys named Jon," was featured on KQED. She has played the Mamapalooza (Moms who Rock) Music Festival, in addition to venues in London, the San Francisco Bay Area, Minnesota, San Diego and other markets.
Kami is a former journalist who writes about the surprises and experiences of life as a single mom. She jokes during shows that she plays "Single Mom Rock." A classically trained flute player and a former student of San Francisco's Blue Bear School of American Music, Kami made her transition into rock and roll official by playing in the cover bands "Moo," and "the Virgins."
This is great stuff.

I picked this CD up by chance while browsing and very pleased I did. It's quite fascinating in its eclectic style ranging from rock (Not Another One - the "single mom rock"?) to near-Folk (Walk With Me) and in the excellent vocal diction from clear and hard-hitting through poignant/plaintive to breathy/quiet. But the outstanding bit for me is the lyrics with powerful social commentary (eg Starvation Diets and Fertile Girl) mixed with wry comments on life (Not Another One and Nowhere To Hide) and stand-up attitude (eg I Want You To Be My Boyfriend). Quite outstanding. A very good record.

Great Songs
Kami Nixon is a unique and powerful songwriter. She goes as effortlessly from serious "message" themed songs to humorous romps as she does from acoustic folk to rockabilly flavored barn burners. This album has something for everyone.
