ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
As a fiddling first mate to a recorder player, I was inspired to explore English, Irish, and Scottish traditional music to create arrangements for our gigging duo. Over several years, I arranged six volumes of this music. Flautilla: Sea Songs Salty and Serene is the fifth volume and the first to be recorded. Collections of traditional music by O'Neill, Gow, and Playford provided the source tunes for these arrangements.

I was born in Holland, a short distance across the stormy channel from the lands where this music originated. As a young girl, I sailed by immigrant ship to America. Much later, I'd walk the Vallejo waterfront and across Mare Island Strait view the ghostly remnants of the West Coast’s oldest shipyard. Those misty memories inspired me to select, arrange, and record Flautilla: Sea Songs Salty and Serene. By recording these arrangements, we hope to add our own interpretation to the body of Celtic music--rich and vast as the seven seas. In honor of those seven seas, this our first CD is priced at seven dollars.

Dorothy van Joolen Barth, violin, with Bertram Barth, recorder
