Album Notes
For Petion-Ville, Haiti born musician,Yvon"Kapi" Andre, music has been in his blood from a young age.

At 16, he became part of the rock group"Los Incognitos,"and as a drummer, he along with a few friends played parties and had fun with the music.

One year later, "Los Incognitos" became Tabou Combo, thanks to the vision of Albert Chancy. The group soon entered a music contest, at Tele Haiti, winning the first prize and leading to many opportunities. They recorded their very first album and start playing nights clubs, and growing in popularity.

But by August 1970, the group disbanded as many members moved on to college. But two months later, on november 1970, two members reunited and the group sprung back on its feet again.

By December of the same year, Andre and his friends were playing their first real gig.In 1974, the group achieved their first huge success in France with a song called "New York City", followed by " Inflacion" sang in Spanish.

As a percusionnist,Andre says he felt obligated to study music in order to become a better songwriter. He started with piano lessons and then enrolled himself in different music programs, studying compositions, chord progressions, and harmony with his mentor Alix "Tit "Pascal.

In early 1990 , Andre founded "La Compagnie Compas", producing young talents, writing jingles and movie scores among other projects. Then inspired by the Buena Vista Social club Project, which featured Cuban music of the 1950's, he decided to do a similar project, rearranging some old classics and by the same token paying tribute to some great Haitian musicians such as Guy Durosier, Dodof Legros, Lumane Casimir, Antal Murat.

"The Afro Caribbean project was born - a blend of traditional and original compositions." 18 Mai" for instance is a song about the haitian flag beautifully penned by Kapi as Andre is popularly called. May 18 is Haiti's flag day.

The Afro Caribbean project, he says , is a bridge between the mother land Africa and the Caribbean and the music itself reflects that idea.

" Pay close attention to the opening song " Anatole" and you will see for yourself what we are talking about " , said Kapi. Roserbie Theoc is the voice behind " 18 Mai" as Kapi works his production magic.

Acts on the CD include Ginou Oriol , a singer who on two occasions sang " The Star Spangled Banner" before the opening of a basket ball game in the American Airlines arena in Miami; Jo Charles a bass legend ; Dener Ceide, a young but " Superb guitar player for whom the instrument has no secret; "Andre Dejean, trumpet icon; Didier Labossiere on alto Sax and Alix Nozile, who won the first prize in a conga contest in Miami recently.

The best Haitian music ever made.
I have heard some good haitian music before, but this is the best. I think it is great.

This was a great find for my collection -- it's truly a comprehensively GREAT CD. The guest artists (both vocalists & every instrumentalist) are perfect choices for the message that Kapi is conveying.
I HIGHLY recommend this.
