On August 27th, 2017, just before 10 pm, a beautiful new Steinway BPE 7’ grand piano was rolled down to the lowest level of the View Street parkade in Victoria, B.C., Canada. Greg Davidson appeared at 10 pm to tune it, and videographer David Malysheff set up cameras to film for a few hours.
Brin and I took the camper loaded with recording gear, and I played ‘til 5 am. The music is all based on themes of bird songs, which I collected on our cross-Canada camping trip in the spring of 2016. Each composition begins with one of the bird calls.
Many thanks to:
Ismo Husu, Victoria city parking manager, for providing the space,
Tom Lee Music for so generously providing the piano,
Kevin and Jim James of James Movers for moving it,
Greg Davidson for tuning it, Simon Phillips for his support,
David Malysheff of Gamut Productions for doing a fantastic job of filming,
Footprints Security for providing extra security for the session and the piano,
the businesses on Fort and View Streets in Victoria, B.C., Canada for their co-operation, and of course
my dear wife, Brin, for her undying support and her beautiful photography.
