Album Notes

Sex, drugs, and rock n' roll - Karey Lee Woolsey's life was a party, from the club stage to the Versace mansion to the hotel room. Girls, booze, drugs.... it all came easy. All, that is, except for true rock success - and the cash it would bring. Every party comes to an end, and when the lure of easy money became too great, it brought Karey Lee's party crashing down around him.

Karey Lee Woolsey kicked off his songwriting career with a bang at the age of 13, landing the first song he ever wrote in rotation at a local Ft. Myers radio station. Before long, Karey Lee was winning talent contests across the country with his original compositions, and opening up for recording artists such as Creed, Sister Hazel, Jars of Clay and Lenny Kravitz while fronting his own band, 3 Days Apart.

"We were doing what the music industry calls 'the grind,' touring up and down the East coast for months at a time with zero time off," Karey Lee remembers of those times. "I was living the dream, but being a starving musician doesn't pay the bills." With debts piling up, Karey Lee decided to take a short cut to the rock star lifestyle.

"I was playing a gig one night and met some guys who were buying us drinks, flashing money around, telling me they liked my music," he says. "Turns out, they were pretty big players in the marijuana business." Following the lead of his new friends, Karey Lee found himself caught up in one of the biggest marijuana operations in the state.

"I told myself I'd just make some easy money on the side while I kept building my music career," he says. "But the money was so good I just lost control and focus." When a top member of the group got busted and began pointing fingers, Karey Lee's public profile made him an easy target. Known as of one of the biggest pot busts in Florida history, Karey Lee was indicted for conspiracy to distribute more than 7,000 pounds of marijuana.

Facing a ten year to life sentence, Karey Lee decided it was time to get back to basics. Without the distraction of the drug trade, he reconnected with his passion for music and songwriting - writing and recording 16 new songs for an album he would call Freedom. "I wrote about love, hate, frustration, motivation, even God," he says. "I needed to say so much before I left for prison, so I spilled it all out into my music." Songs like "Fall In You," "Get Up and Drive," and "Only In My Dreams" range from rock to R&B, and reflect a rediscovered dedication to his craft.

Even as he struggled to turn his life around, a federal judge turned it upside down - sentencing Karey Lee to 13 years in prison. He was devastated, unable to contemplate such a lengthy sentence. A non-violent, first time offender, Karey Lee received more prison time than some murderers. But he chose not to feel sorry for himself. "I knew I had to take the worst decision I ever made and turn it into something positive," he says.

Karey Lee vowed to use his time behind bars to lay the ground work for a triumphant return to music. "When I first got to prison, something snapped," he says. "My creative side just came alive.." Since beginning his sentence in 2008, Karey Lee has written more than 150 songs, with just as many ideas in various stages of completion. "I was writing songs in bed, in the cafeteria. in the shower," he says. " I started to realize that my gift for coming up with a catchy hook and a melody is something I can use to rebuild a career in music.."

As his release date approaches, Karey Lee tries to stay grounded and plan for a life outside the prison walls - one that will include giving back to the community. "I'd like to share my story with young people, tell them how such a stupid decision can take away your future, show them what not to do," he says.

But his biggest dream is to rebuild his life in music, using the talent that first unfolded in that Florida bedroom all those years ago. "Music is my life," he says. "When I veered too far away from it, God stepped in and said, 'hey kid, you're throwing away a gift.'"

Karey Lee's learned one lesson the hard way - there are no shortcuts to success.. "There's no such thing as easy money," he says. "That rock and roll lifestyle was so tempting, and I got greedy. It distracted me from what I needed to do. But now I know that there's no substitute for hard work and determination, and nobody out there will work harder than me." All that's tempting Karey Lee now are new sounds and new songs - and the chance at a new life doing what he truly loves
