ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Karl Lyden is a low-brass musician in New York City. He performs with big bands, various horn sections, and in the pit orchestras of several Broadway shows. Lyden also worked in the show bands of Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Lines. In the summer of 2013, he performed in Disneyland as lead trombonist with the All-American College Band.

Lyden is equally active as a composer and arranger. His first big band chart “Downside Up” was the 2011 Winner for Undergraduate Orchestrated Work in Downbeat Magazine. He regularly arranges for salsa bands, swing bands, and singer songwriters. Lyden received his B.A. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he became well-versed in jazz and classical. He then completed a Master's at New York University where he was an adjunct faculty instructor.

"Undercurrents" includes eight originals written for an ensemble of 5-8 musicians: Danny Jonokuchi - trumpet, Christian Choh - alto sax, Eric Trudel - tenor sax, Karl Lyden - trombone, Jeff McLaughlin - guitar, Marta Sánchez - piano, Marty Kenney - electric and upright bass, and Mareike Wiening - drums. The album was recorded at the NYU Dolan Studio and engineered by Tyler McDiarmid. It was mixed by Sam Minaie and mastered by Nate Wood.

The title "Undercurrents" refers to the idea of a hidden force in opposition to the norm. Much of the music is contrapuntal with clashing lines that are somehow inextricably linked.
