Album Notes
The virtuosic guitar works written by Spanish composer Dionisio Aguado (1784 – 1849) are known for their technically demanding nature, with Introduction and Rondo brillant, op. 2 no. 2 being no exception. Aguado is also well-known for his guitar method, which heavily influenced the development of classical guitar technique as we know it today.

Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo (1901 – 1999), who is famous for his guitar concerto 'Concierto de Aranjuez', dedicated En los trigales (In the wheat fields) to Spanish guitarist Regino Sainz de la Maza, who premiered the piece in 1938.

Fête villageoise 'Rondo caprice', op. 20 is one of the earlier works by the Italian romantic composer and guitarist Giulio Regondi (1822 – 1872). In his time there was a preference for louder insturments and sounds. This included as Liszt's piano music and the powerful orchestral scores of Berlioz and Wagner. Unfortunately this resulted in a lack of guitar repertoire originating from this era.
Regondi's life story is interesting – already at the age of 7 he made his promising debut in Paris, followed by many successes in London, and then playing concerts all over Europe with many world-renowned musicians such as Clara Schumann, Ignaz Moscheles, Maria Malibran and others.

Quatre pièces brèves (Four short pieces) was written in 1933 in Geneva by the Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890 – 1974) after he was enraptured by the playing of the famous Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia. The piece is now considered one of the most important and substantial pieces of the classical guitar repertoire that was written in the first half of the 20th century. This is partly due to the composer's usage of many characteristics from the baroque period, for example the titles of the movements and the contrapunctic structure.

One of the most acknowledged Slovenian composers and professors at the Academy of Music Ljubljana Alojz Srebotnjak (1931 – 2010), was influenced by many renowned composers across Europe during his years studying in Rome, Paris, London and Siena. In 1999 he received the Grand Prešeren Award for his lifetime work, which is the highest artistic recognition in Slovenia. His only guitar composition entitled Due movimenti was written in 1977 and it contains a lot of macedonian folklore elements.

Polish composer Alexandre Tansman (1897 – 1986) spent most of his life in France, but despite the contemporary musical characteristics prevailing in his era, he chose to write in a neoclassical manner. In his compositions he incorporated many extended harmonies, chromatics and polytonality. In the Variations on a theme by Scriabin we can first hear a melancholy theme (taken from Scriabin's piano Prelude op. 16 no. 4) followed by 6 virtuosic variations of different characters, the last one written as fugato.

Chiton was written in 2003 by the Slovenian composer Uroš Rojko (*1954). Rojko is a clarinetist and professor of composition at the Academy of Music Ljubljana This composition was inspired by Goya's grotesque painting which was also named Chiton. In the piece Rojko uses many unconventional compositional approaches including the use of only one actually played tone in the whole piece. This increases the expressive possibilities of the guitar.
