Album Notes
This project sprang from an idea I had in 2001 while an arranging major in graduate school. I had heard the album Steal Away by Hank Jones and Charlie Haden and wondered why no one else in the jazz world had attempted to do an album solely focusing on this material. Sure, jazz musicians have covered and will continue to cover hymns, spirituals, or gospel songs sparsely, and plenty of other artists have covered this material in an effort to capture the "church/soulful" vibe that is common in most black music. For me, however, growing up a PK (preacher's kid), hymns and spirituals were my "standards." I had heard them long before I got bit by the "jazz bug" and I wanted to revisit them from the perspective of a jazz pianist using the piano trio format. This album contains almost all of the hymns that I first adapted for the piano trio and the arrangements are mostly unchanged from the first drafts conceived in 2001. It is my hope that all who listen to this album will hear the message of each song as well as the tradition of the jazz piano trio. Of course, none of this would have been possible without Mike and Bobby. They are two of the most gracious human beings and outstanding cats on their instruments. Without them this album would still be just and idea.

The KWT sincerely thanks our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for the opportunity to share this music with you. Extra special thanks to our families, friends, fans and everyone who helped make this recording possible.
