ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Kate Lawton plays rhythm acoustic guitar, provides lead vocals and writes all of the music and lyrics for the Kate Lawton Band.

Since the early 90s, Kate has played with "You and Me: the Expandajam Boogie Woogie Blues Band," "The Headstone Circus," "The Floating Folk Festival" and "The Kate Lawton Band."

As the Richmond Times Dispatch's Bill Craig put it, Kate's "significant appeal is driven by the potent emotion of her vocals and the intellectual value of her lyrics... She hit both ends of the serious spectrum."

In 1999 Kate was selected as one of the top 20 female acoustic acts in the mid-atlantic region by the 1999 Llilith Fair Talent Search and from 1999-2002 had songs featured on both the Floating Folk Festival Volumes 2 & 3 CD and Countdown, a local compilation CD organized to raise money for the homeless. She has opened up for bands like Regan, Jackass Flats and the Jerry Garcia Band and shared festival billing with the likes of Keller Williams, Corey Harris Band, Cheap Trick, Little Feat and many others.

Musicians on "Psycho Girl" include drummer Jeff Turley, Meade Skelton, Brooke Saunders, Pedal Steel player Dan Crelin, and jazz guitarist Curtis Mills of The Mills Family Band.

The CD is great! Good depth and variety...
"The CD is great. You have a unique voice. Nanci Griffith is one of my favorite artists and (the CD) has a "Nanci meets Lucinda Williams sound" which is a good thing. Good depth and variety and my music loving young daughters have moved you over U2 and The Dixie Chicks as their favorite."

In this case, psycho is a good thing. :)
All of us are psychos in our own way, and Kate's music is easy to relate to. The music is real and not overproduced, and the lyrics are smart and actually say something. Her voice has many sounds and all of them are from the heart, you can tell she loves to sing. The songs run from the edge of country through modern folk to the edge of rock, and all of them are full of soul. After one listen, you'll catch yourself singing a chorus from this album.

Richmond, Virginia's best kept secret
Psycho Girl features Kate's music from 1998 to the present. Her songs can break your heart or have you smiling with joy or have you up and dancing. The CD focuses on her voice which is a powerful force. Songs like Back of My Mind & Whistlestop show how she channels that power into beautiful music. I've said it before but I'll say it again: Kate is Great!!!

I am so freaking addicted to this cd...
I picked this CD up on a whim because I liked the title and I am SO GLAD THAT I DID!!! Kate's vocals and music are incredible. I guess what makes her incredible is that her sound is different - I can't really definitively compare her to anyone else, but I can catch glimpses of her influences. Each song has it's own flavor, but Kate has a very consistent style that shines through the album as a whole. The songs on the album range from fun rockers (I Am But A Girl, Ha Ha Ha) to intense and meaningful songwriting (Psycho Girl, Daydreaming, Whistlestop) to insightfully personal revelations (Autobiography). I also love the flow of this album. From start to finish, from each rocking peak to each emotional valley, Psycho Girl is a totally smooth ride.

All I can say is BUY THIS ALBUM!! and you won't be disappointed. Give Kate a chance and you will be singing her songs to bed, singing her songs when you wake up, singing her songs when you drive down the street...

Well crafted songs and intricate, insightful songwriting.
Kate Lawton was one of the better things on the Floating Folk Festival's second CD. Her song Daydreaming was soulful, with powerful lyrics about broken dreams and hope. It left an impression. And her debut album leaves an impression. The 11 country-folk-rock ballads about life, love and lost love are well-crafted and feature her quirky, engaging vocals and her intricate, insightful songwriting.

The album is superbly mixed. Kate is creative as usual. My toes tapped hours after the CD had ended. Hey... I didn't know you were with that hot Raleigh band, You & Me, the Expanda Jam Boogie Woogie Band!!! Now Y'all Rocked Hard!!!

My mom thanks you!
I gave this to Mom for Mother's Day, and she loved it. Then, when she found out that she had seen you play with You & Me the Expanda Jam Boogie Woogie Band, she was even more thrilled!
