Album Notes

"This CD is the product of two exceptional talents coming together to create something that is at once magical and practical. Use this CD not just to improve your physical and emotional well-being, but to add a touch of wonder and inspiration into your daily life."
--Amanda Riches, Yoga teacher and Director of Namaste TV

"I am taken by this beautiful collaboration of Kate and Dirje. Truly a gift of complimentary energies, Dirje’s masterful handling of solo and layered improvisational structures gracefully accompanies and highlights the essence of Kate’s spoken word. Utilizing different models of cellos to guide the listener through the Contemplations, this unique synthesis of musician and practitioner celebrate stillness and peace. I have found that each track has its own special energy, with Dirje’s rich sonorous cello mingling and dissolving stresses with every breath. A joy to recommend!"
--Wayne Burak, world renown Luthier and Master Cellist

"Kate Potter's gentle, loving voice guides us through Savasana with a clear understanding of how the quiet, alert mind and body can be attained by all who listen and follow. Paired with Dirje Childs' beautiful music, a still, strong magic takes place. The music is personal, warm, but never overpowers. Together, Kate and Dirje bring the listener to a place of calm strength."
--Rodney Sharman, former Composer-in-Residence of the Vancouver and Victoria Symphony Orchestras and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.

Kate Potter has been teaching Yoga and Yoga Therapy for 25 years of full-time practice. Her work has taken her to retreat centers, studios, hospitals and board rooms, teaching a style of Yoga and meditation that comes from a broad background of training, and years of honing her craft. It is really Kate's ability to listen and connect that sets her apart. Her background in Vedantic Philosophy, Zen Meditation and Ayurveda is now blended with a new an profound interest in music which is taking her into fields of study and practice she never dreamed would coincide. Kate's renowned Yoga practice series "Namaste" seen on 5 continents, has fans around the world tuning in to her voice and asking for more. Kate lives and teaches in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

For 20 years, Dirje Childs has worked as a professional listener, both as a Licensed Professional Counselor and a freelance improvisational cellist. She has counseled individuals and groups in clinics, schools, and private practice, coached people with chronic illness, and presented seminars on personal growth, creativity, and wellness. As a cellist, she is known for her ability to craft music in the moment, and has performed and recorded with countless singer-songwriters. She has recently moved to Austin, Texas, to be more involved in the Blue Rock Foundation and to expand her creative path--especially her composing. All the compositions on this album were crafted in-the-moment in the studio, while listening to Kate's recorded narrations.

Kate: "After receiving hundreds of requests from Namaste TV listeners--letters from all over the world, asking me to please make a CD, and telling me how healing and soothing my voice is--I knew when I heard Dirje's cello, I thought--'it is time'."

Dirje: "For years, at festivals and concerts, people come up afterward with tears in their eyes--somehow my cello has sung to their hearts, to all the broken places....they are so appreciative. So when I heard Kate's voice, her teaching--I knew immediately I wanted to work with her."

Both artists are grounded in the knowledge that mindfulness, returning to breath, and resting in the present moment, is where freedom and peace dwell. These guided contemplative practices in stillness are designed for everyone. There is no dogma here, only the invitation to pause and breathe and be in this living river of calm.

There are eight tracks total, six are cello(s) and narration, two are cello(s) only.

The album prelude is a short multi-cello selection, to reset and refresh listeners, followed by the four contemplations. These are longer 10 to 15 minute pieces--some are to be done seated, some standing and some lying down. The postlude is another short selection, helping listeners to drift off to sleep. The last two pieces are music-only versions of the shorter pieces--rich multi-layer cellos.

Now this project has found you--we hope you'll accept the invitation to experience with us the Alchemy of Stillness.

My new Happy Place
This is an incredible CD! I've been struggling with fear for quite sometime and when I listened to the CD for the first time I thought the "A Dream is Alive" track (standing meditation) could help. It's been over 2 months of daily practice and I have seen a huge difference. I catch myself saying out loud "I'm ready for anything" often and I finally have a set date for my first coaching workshop! I can't thank Kate and Dirje enough for this gift. I had hip surgery a week and a half ago and knew exactly what to do to get ready - standing meditation. The surgery was a success and a day after surgery I didn't need pain medication. I can't walk yet but I feel great and now I listen to the "River Journeys" track daily to relax so my body can heel. Thank you Kate and Dirje for sharing your art and passion with all of us!

The Alchemy of Stillness - such a fitting title
This CD put me in a place to start writing more poetry. I had signed up for a free poetry course that was sitting in my inbox for about 5 months. The morning after I first experienced the four contemplations, I started this poetry course. My first poem, a haiku, describes my immediate response to this CD.

Tears came like dew drops
Condensed from truth and beauty
Clearing my vision

(If you are curious, the rest of the poems are on my blog regroovenating.com)

I have known Kate as a yoga teacher for over 8 years. For me, it's very centering to have the guidance of a trusted teacher sharing the the simple profound practice of stillness. It is alchemy indeed. It has helped me to develop a practice of meditation, which previously was on that list of things I really know would be good to do.
I've used this recording countless times. This collaborative work of Dirje's cello and Kate's voice is a comfort, an encouragement, a poetic delight, an invocation of inner strength, a sublime healing rest and a lullaby. I teach yoga as well, and I love to use the instrumental tracks in my classes.

Meditative Awakening

Fabulous piece for anchoring consciousness and establishing presence
Kate & Dirje have created magic with this work. The combination of soothing cello with Kate's majestic voice brings the listener in harmony with the wholeness of self, allowing focus and concentration in each of the areas addressed on the tracks. The quality of presence allows a type of emotional reboot, preparing the listener for a fresh and deep approach to each topic, whether that is being present or relaxing into blissful savasana and sleep. This CD is ideal for either the novice or experienced meditator. No other guidance is needed to fully appreciate the experience.

It is a tool for quality life experience.

Kate and Dirje, I made a moment last evening to sit and explore the Four Contemplations that I gratefully received a few days ago. I have to offer my initial experience with this ethereal adventure that you have both created. Firstly, the work was like a cool salve on my soul and I fell into a profoundly present space. It was received at such a deep soul space that could have only been touched by this specific beauty. Really, I can't describe it....maybe like new strands of DNA awakening would feel this sublime. Your voice, so filled with grace, love and presence. The chakra awakenings from the soulful cello and the similar energy behind it. Honestly, it feels like a reward from the Goddesses at a time so pinpoint perfect for the quantum leap I am taking this month spiritually. So, then I was half-way through with "A Dream Is Alive" when my solar plexus blew open so intensely that I had to slowly lay down. I stayed laying down through Savasana and went to bed. (great sleep) So this is as far as I've gotten. At another perfect time will I explore the rest of it. Then begin it again and again. I have some very special friends with whom to share my extra copies! From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this work of blessed beauty. It has already raised the vibration of this multi-verse with purity and light. Can you feel it? In gratitude and light, Lynn

What a Gift!!
This CD is magnificent; truly a gift I get to receive over and over as I listen and soak in its beauty. What magical artistry to put out into a world where most of us need a way to de-stress on a daily basis. I can't recommend it enough!

House painter gives two thumbs up!
Lately I have taken to listening to Four Contemplations “passively”-- as underscore while working in the garden, doing dishes, driving, cycling. Enjoying the rhythm and musicality of Ms. Potter's voice and Ms. Child's cello, which change according to each practice. Soothing, grounding, and yet expansive. A phrase or passage will break through to resonate with thoughts I might be having, crystallizing and focusing my attention or taking me in new directions.

Last week I was painting the second story of a house, high on an extension ladder, listening on my i-Pod. The Standing Meditation (“A Dream Is Alive”) was just what I needed. Stability, resilience, strength, stamina, balance, focus. It was just what I needed in that moment. It could have been written for the house painters of the world!

A Magical Beauty!
I've been taking yoga workshops with Kate Potter for the past 8+ years and this is some of her best work. She combines her talent of relaxing the body and mind with that of musician Dijre Childs for a wonderfully magic experience. Relaxation is hard in this fast paced world and more important than ever in the busy, stressful world we all live in. So, let the collaboration of these two talented ladies take you deeply into your inner space of deep relaxation. You'll feel so refreshed afterwards that you will be amazed at how free your mind has become to think more clearly. You will notice how the physical tension you've been carrying has melted away allowing you to physically move about with freedom, simply by listening to this guidance and music. It's like being able to take a mini retreat for your body and mind, any place, any time!
