ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Highland Fantasy" was requested by a Pennsylvania oboist for Scottish Heritage Sunday at his church. The solo oboe evokes the sounds of bagpipes, reels and Scottish folk tunes of the Highlands.

When I discovered that a bassoonist friend had a daughter who played oboe, I wrote "Gotta Minute Suite" for them. Each of the short movements is related to their family history -- a beloved family pet, a ragtime tune in honor of their hometown, a mirrored melody for Mom, bookended by a Fanfare and a Finale, in which Mozart meets "Carmen."

The unique haunting sound of the English horn inspired "Summer's Echo," based on two English poems -- Shakespeare's "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day" and the rhapsodic and bittersweet "Echo" by Christina Rossetti. The piano provides the perfect partner for this expressive dialogue with the English horn. Throughout the piece, motifs hover around the edges of the piano part, returning like haunting memories -- echoes of summers past.

At a double reed conference, I met a bassoonist who requested a "Tango." Patrice's performance on "Reeds & Echoes" captures perfectly the sultry, passionate rhythms of this colorful Argentinian dance.

"The Elements" takes as its basis the four elements of ancient Greek philosophy: earth, water, air and fire. A tour-de-force for the soloist, the oboe sings, dances and, in the finale, mimics the flickerings, flare-ups and the dying embers of a "Forest Fire."
