Album Notes
Recorded when she was nine months pregnant, Katie Murphy’s solo debut A Nest in a Box has struck a chord with her growing audience. Aptly themed with reflections on domesticity – stories of love, motherhood and relationships – Murphy’s spirited pop with shades of roots and soul ponders ideas of comfort versus confinement: a nest in a box.

While living in Toronto, Katie had attracted the attention of producer Greg O’Shea (k-os), who worked his smooth co-producing magic on Murphy’s original compositions. The album also features the incredible talents of Maury Lafoy (Jann Arden, Sarah Harmer), Richard Brown (Big Sugar), and Nelson Milley (k-os). Murphy fills the album with enough variety to keep the listener interested without pulling them in too many directions: from the playfully boho That’s Right, to the soulful ode to a lover When I Got Sick, from the light rock of All That I Wanted, to the heart-breaking solitude heard in Home too Long.

A proud Winnipegger, Katie continues to reinforce her profile with performances at the 2007 WhiteShell and Trout Forest Music Festivals, as well as with continued appearances on Shaw and CityTV. A Nest in a Box has won some local commercial and college radio play, though Murphy is no stranger to radio – in 2000 she co-penned a song, Pushing Flowers with Toronto producers Version Xcursion. The track went to #1 on the CBC Galaxie Radio charts in 2006.
