Album Notes
“Blind Opening” is Katie’s debut album, made possible by supporters of a 2017 Kickstarter campaign. It is a culmination of music and lyrics written and developed by Katie since 2008, and was recorded in the course of a two-day period at Winds Over the Earth studio in Longmont, Colorado, by sound engineer Daniel Herman (Mineral Sound: www.mineralsound.com).

The music on this album is inspired by Katie’s favorite songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, jazz pianist composer Thelonious Monk, and the piano compositions of Ravel, Stravinsky, and Chopin. The purpose of the album is to paint an auditory landscape for the listener to explore emotions they may often abandon in daily life and routine.

A Short History of Katie’s past, present, and future:
Even before her exposure to piano at age eight, Katie enjoyed her own form of composing by dictating the sounds she imagined in her head on paper. Her initial inspiration to compose music on piano came from the movie “The Changeling” starring George C. Scott. The film’s supernatural plot, based off of a ghost story that took place in Denver (but was portrayed in Seattle in the film about a composer haunted by tragedy), first drew Katie in to the idea of working to become a pianist composer. It also called upon her belief that music is a way of connecting with otherworldly entities and experiences. She’s been defining and honing her musical composition style and skill while paving her creative direction since her conservatory studies. Aside from solo music work, Katie also draws, creates stop-animation videos, paints, sculpts, and writes poetry – all inspired by her musical creations.

The music on each song is a sound painting of the lyrics. Without the lyrics, the music wouldn't exist.

Moving forward
all my plans I dreamed in childhood
nowhere near me now
I can't save me
from this self annihilation
But then I met you

Spying on my universe,
A telescope, so well rehearsed
You cast an unexpected curse
on all my music

You were just another muse
until the notes got so confused
and now I'm singing all my songs
in twelve tone pieces

I've got only myself to blame
I knew you were no good but
I tried anyway
But all my efforts weren't spent in vain, cause
Here we go again
round my little refrain

Feeling closed in
suffocating, no sky in sight
Black glass blocks the sun
Sucking, scalding
acid bites you lay in my skin
swell with no desire

Frantic glance, there's no escape
you feed me through this metal crate
I found the calm then took new shape
there's no time wasted

While you're plotting eminence
I grip the holes in your defense
and rip through the right circumstance,
Devour your essence

You've got only yourself to blame
You knew I wouldn't last long
in this little cage
But all your efforts weren't spent in vain, cause
Here we go again,
round my little refrain

Breaking Down:
Upside down
look at the people
dots into crowds
“Shiny, happy people”

from any angle
Swarming around
a picnic table
Working inside
a plastic bubble
Avoiding a life of any trouble

Empty sighs
inside jelly bodies
squirming around
flapping feet on ground

Craving a social regulation
Responsible subordination
Faces no love and no relation
Inside an empty occupation

I’m breaking down
these houses and
I’m breaking up
these bricks and stones
when all I am is what I own
I’m breaking down,
I’m breaking

I see heroes
like a disease
spread a belief
to saturate your needs

On the radio
they put on a good show
and laugh at our shadows
and pretend
that we don’t know

from any angle
Swarming around
a picnic table
Working inside
a plastic bubble
Avoiding a life of any trouble

I’m breaking down
these houses and…

Come, lie with me
come lap the sugar
from the lion's skin
Now bleed for me,
drip with your salvation
on my chin

Fledgling dark,
I won't bite until starved

Count the days:
Fickle hearts
A season's pace

Swoop down and fill your feathers
iridescent colors glow
And now that I've got
your attention
there is something
I forgot to show

Speak my name,
pour your silky musk
into my ear
Those tentacles
can reach in places
I had thought to fear
Beat fast and hard,
your blood is screaming
lush in high despair
Break free the rush,
pin it down
a pointed sliver spear

Drop the ink now glistening
from my tongue
and scratch your secrets
in my skin

And take your arrows
from my body
splay the wounds
and feed them to the crows
As sun decays our meeting
wake me in the evening's soul

Purge your heart, burn
You won't be sorry
Swallow this pearl
Take my whole body

Wild Girl:
Wild girl
falls in love faster
feels the world’s laughter
dances within
Wild Girl
heart untenable
reaches the sensual
touches your sin
Takes all her dresses
mops up your messes
naked you run through the night
drifting together
two birds of a feather
riding on all of her might

Wild girl
challenging verity
heart defies gravity
plays on the fringe
Wild girl
look at your play thing
steadily wavering
sinking, unhinged

Scared to admit it
acting a bigot
turning away from the show
pleasures now hazy
label her “crazy”
keep her without letting go

Wild girl
tired of waiting
endless debating
draws her own plan
Wild girl
dormant, unshaken
collects what you’ve taken
finally stands
Try to contain it
try to reframe it
truth is,
you’re part of the scheme
hurt unintended
you just pretended
to smile
while you bottled her scream

Wild girl
scribbling on paper
love is a labor
keeps her from sleep
Wild girl
wants to feel better
by writing this letter
read it and weep

I like to feel the wind
rolling off of my hands
and feet
in the silence of sun
Windows wide open
and your face is covered
n fog
from a night of our love

Dancing and cheer
Spinning and whirling,
we drunk in the splendor of strangers
Kissing my palms
you danced with me,
danced with my fingers
wove music through vales

Memories, hold close
all your memories
which pull your way forward
in presence of fear
Remember the swirl,
all the colors
that night when our love
was embracing the world
wash my hands
Strength has returned
It is burning though,
burning through my voice,
whatever remains

Dance with me friend
spin me and whirl me again
'till I know where I am
Feeling the wind
and listening for silence
the sun weaving warmth in my dreams

In my dreams
you dance
with me

Palms (written for Amelia Petrie to perform in Ambiance Duo):
I hear an echo in my palm
If you can hear it, sing along
We can be voices in the trees
Building our houses with sticks and strings

Sending a message on paper wings
Dissolving through distance and milky dreams
And there is nothing but this seed
Growing and moving through me

You are my childhood dressed in grey
Hooded in music, come to play
Yellow and envious, I follow your sound
Hidden in silence between my palms

Stringing the pieces of love gone by
Open my heart just to catch your eye
Crystal and gleaming, pink and white
Turning your head away from my light

Here in the forest, I catch the rain
Into a wooden cup you've made
But the water is bitter and rancid,
I left it out too long
So I swallow my longing and write another song.

Shooting Stars:
I took a nap this afternoon
but I woke up too soon
When I awoke
the world was grey
Guess the clouds have finally got their way

In the clouds there live dreams
that suffer when the sun shines
When the world falls asleep
they come creeping,
Ghostly vines

One clear night
I saw one stray
to meet up with one far away
From their veil they traveled far
disguised as only shooting stars

I walk along the empty streets
feel the passing of a thousand beats
from the asphalt to my heart
connecting souls from worlds apart

In the clouds…

Summer is Changing:
Blue wisp inside, I hear your questions
Crossing the miles from my ear
Flit of your wings, and I am rising
Higher and high till I’m not here

Reflections that echo over oceans
Voice I have known through all these years
Singing when I’ve forgotten music
Mirrored in songs you haven’t heard

Summer is changing

Stars which shone inside my daydreams
now you’re always there instead
Sun that washed me and forgave me
calls a cooler wind ahead

Wild things, they all have their secrets
Kept inside smiles lock and key
Capture them they will never answer
Cradle them loosely they will speak

Hummingbird heart you flutter freely
Blossoms you feed on die in vain
Try as I may I can’t contain you
Faster you fly in my old age

Endless heat, the trees enduring
transfer to our heart’s dismay
Fervor on the leaves now showing
till they die and fall away

Summer is changing

Love hide away another winter
Safely cocooned inside the cold
Flurries of snow that white the windows
Whispers of bliss to free my soul

Set the earth on fire
align us with the stars
grow your ladders taller
and branch out with your arms

The fact remains
that no one’s sane
and we can’t keep it still
Just take my eyes
and lead my gaze
along the ocean sky

Burn those witches
Hang those witches
Take the lady down

I can see the fire
from the bottom of this hill
gleaming rings of Saturn
among a mystery still

Inside the dark
our breath is warm
and damp against the glass
And fingerprints
like ghosts remain
a memory of this time

Burn those witches
Hang those witches
Take the lady down

At the universe end
there are so many stars
watching as we fall
And the cycle within
and the stardust inside
keep our bellies full

But you’re still setting fires
so that evolution fails
Can’t you hear our whispers
guiding peaceful sails

You navigate
a blind brigade
the coast is close at hand
The prospect of
our end in sight
a bloody seed remains

Burn those witches
Hang those witches
Blame Us Witches
Take the lady down

Stars are Seeds:
We traveled through the city veins
the skylights bursting at the seams
on the horizon lay the green
of all our children’s foggy dreams
We came across a broken man
with barbells chained around his sleeves
He told us of a group of thieves
that feed on hope until we fall like dying leaves

The ones who fall will find a way
to build their rockets out of clay
to keep the monsters from their prey
to find a heart where demons lay

And with the cycle moving on
we’ll live until our world is gone
and move our prospects to the sky
where stars are seeds and so am I

I swim in watermelon sky
the stars are seeds and so am I
without connection there’s no cause
and so you live inside my heart

And in our desperate darkness lies
the likeness in a stranger’s eyes
where we will travel once again
with ancient jewels in the skies

And if we are an aperture
from which the universe shines through
then let us beam like bursting starts
reflecting light from me to you

I swim in watermelon sky…
