Album Notes
Katy Gunn is an American songwriter, producer, violinist and performance artist. Having studied classical violin from the age of two, living nomadically between Europe and the U.S., Katy’s eclectic influences have resulted in her own musical language, playing on the genres of classical, jazz, electronic and pop music. Her recent collaborations with Method Man (Wu Tang Clan) and Anna Lidell (Teenage Love) show her varied approach to both songwriting and production as a multi-faceted artist.

Whispering Voices is the culmination of her years experimenting with pop music and performance art/sound installations. Written based on concepts for a group exhibition she produced with visual artist Sol Kjok in New York City, Whispering Voices was composed for her collaborative performance with interdisciplinary artist Autumn Kioti, expressing themes related to humanity and the intimate ways in which were are all connected.

All the sounds heard in Whispering Voices are recordings of Katy’s voice and hands, further manipulated via techniques she developed in Ableton Live to create full song compositions. Of Katy’s title track from Whispering Voices, The Music Ninja writes, ‘Katy Gunn is a one-woman musical army in ‘Hate’ bringing an enchanting soundscape…’. Ethereal vocals create a backdrop for heavy grooves and catchy melodic ideas, creating an electronically-influenced choir of voices complimenting one another.

This release reflects an inner struggle for identity and meaning, with an emphasis on both the beauty and inner conflict of being human. Live performances of Whispering Voices entail aerial work by Autumn Kioti, and choreographed movement between Katy and Autumn both on the ground and in the air. The performance of Whispering Voices debuted at Last Frontier in NYC.
