Album Notes
For her debut album, the nuanced lyricism of this emerging vocalist is artfully accompanied by some of New Orleans’ finest instrumentalists. Kaya brings the melodic sensibilities of her background as a horn player to her interpretation of a lyric, tastefully framing the expressive solos of her outstanding collaborators. Her sweet, soulful sound is the golden thread that binds this eclectic collection of styles and timbres.

In configurations ranging from duo to sextet, eight outstanding artists join her in this labor of love. Her collaborators include both seasoned musicians and rising stars, all of whom are in high demand in New Orleans and beyond. Her associate producer, musician-educator Michael Pellera contributes his sensitive piano playing to four of the tracks, including his own gorgeous ballad, “When You Said You Loved Me.” Veteran multi-instrumentalist Thaddeus Richard not only takes the keys for another three but also brings his wit and wisdom to the Hammond B-3 for “Embraceable You.” Bassist, David Pulphus holds down the low end for several tunes, including Kaya’s original “Front Door Man,” an unconventional vocals-bass-drums trio performance for which he serves up some thick, delicious lines; and a long-time mentor to Kaya, seasoned New Orleans bassist Richard Moten swings “Cheek to Cheek” along with five other tracks. Acclaimed guitarist and educator Steve Masakowski joins in on four selections, bringing a warm, classic sound to the Brazilian standards. Geoff Clapp is solidly on time for five tracks and percussionist Kenyatta Simon has his hand on the pulse for several others. Four songs are enhanced by the subtle colorations or enchanting solos of Rex Gregory, who shines out loud on saxophones and flute.

From ballads to blues to bossa and beyond, this anthology encompasses themes of romantic love, human relationships and positive messages for a new day. A portion of the album’s proceeds will benefit Sweet Home New Orleans, a non-profit organization that provides resources and support to New Orleans’ musicians and culture bearers (www.sweethomeneworleans.org).

A music educator by day, Kaya has been splitting her time between the classroom and the stage in recent years. In 2007 she debuted as a featured vocalist at both the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Satchmo Summerfest, and since then has graced the stage in venues such as the renowned Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, WWOZ fm radio and the Contemporary Arts Center as well as fine Crescent City destinations like The Windsor Court and the Historic Columns Hotel. A sought-after elementary and early childhood music specialist, Ms. Martínez is proud to be a part of the renaissance of public education in New Orleans.
