Album Notes
My name is Kaylene. I got my start singing on stage in churches at the age of four with a traveling gospel group. It was fun and I suppose it gave me a chance to get over the stage fright thing early! By the time I was nine, I was becoming a lot more interested in music. My first influences were Amy Grant, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey. I taught myself to sing by listening to their albums over and over again in my room, since I was an only child.

In fourth grade, I joined the school choir where I sang for six years, also performing in the show choir for two years. I took piano lessons for four years, along the way, and even played drums in the middle school band. This gave me a foundation of theory to build on.

After singing in cover bands as a teenager, I co-produced my first solo album. It was inspired mostly from my poems and personal experiences. This was an ambient, trip-hop turn and featured local Orlando hip-hop artists. My second album was more like a portfolio of my songwriting, which was growing more diverse in my early twenties. It has songs from various genres- including jazz, acoustic, lounge, dance, and adult contemporary.

My story wouldn't be complete if I didn't have a quarter life crisis and move to LA to start a rock band! Though I wrote some new songs when I was there, I definitely went through culture shock- having grown up in the South. I found it hard to make deep connections with people in Hollywood, so I felt lonely and did a lot of soul-searching. I realized I had been putting my career first and was slowly losing myself. I started going to a church in Long Beach, where I decided to rededicate my life to God and keep Him first in my life.

My music took on a different sound after that. It was uplifting, with an inspirational pop feel. Though I listened to a lot of Contemporary Christian music when I was young, it didn't prepare me for what I would encounter in the real world. There are so many dark things that people can face, but God wants to shine a light of hope into your circumstances. I would love to share what I've learned and bring a positive message through my third project- my new EP, produced by Brett Hestla. Thank you for listening to the first single!
