A Time of Innocence

by Keith Driskill

Fingerstyle acoustic guitar that has been described as new age with a touch of folk. Many who have heard this music will tell you how deeply moving it can be - a "healing effect" - an "emotional journey" that can't be expressed in words.

Album Notes
"Keith's instrumental acoustic guitar album captivates and inspires without words. With trademark hook motifs, well-thought out progressions, and enthralling subtlety, he can transport the listener to places and emotions both uncommon and serene." Review from NewAgeMusicWorld.com / NewAgeMusic.nu
It really doesn’t matter how old you are, but I would be willing to take a guess and say that there was a time in your life when everything seemed much simpler. Living the carefree life as a youngster might be the best way to describe this positively uplifting feeling that everyone has experienced at one time. Keith Driskill has created an acoustic guitar album that gives one the impression of those lighthearted days by gentle guitar melodies of inspiration. His release A Time of Innocence is an acoustic guitar album that at least, momentarily shuttles the listener to a relaxing state of mind by its peaceful down to earth purity. Keith Driskill performs superbly on acoustic guitar using the fingerstyle technique, and as it turns out, he is pretty well versed in articulating the emotional imagery of those carefree days, and does so with amazing clarity. Finding an early fascination in learning how to play the guitar at age 10, Keith began to explore and develop his own skills during the early years as a youngster growing up in Kentucky. This may have had something to do with the present day Utah resident’s abilities at expressing the simplistic period of our youth by fine guitar melodies. A Time of Innocence is a New Age, Solo Guitar album with traditional Folk music elements. The 9 songs are best defined as serene and peaceful, yet there is a broader modulation of warmth and depth, which makes A Time of Innocence something rather unique and special. On the surface you will find light guitar rhythms comingle and reside in time with more complex tracings of depth and refinement which is a nice counterpart to the lighter more serene qualities. The song Lover’s Farewell is the melody I felt best compliments this adaptation. The equally relaxing Moonlight Lullaby & Fireflies each convey an elevated atmosphere of inspiration. It may be less important how I phrase the description of Keith Driskill’s acoustic guitar music, just so long as wonderfully uplifting music is incorporated when summarizing his solo guitar endeavors. While true none of us can return to the carefree days of our youth, Keith’s guitar melodies offers a moment to reminisce about those lighthearted days of our past that ironically turn out to be important to most of us during our adult years. It’s an easygoing acoustic expression about A Time of Innocence.

Review excerpt from MusicWatch
Of all the instruments musicians have at their disposal the acoustic guitar is arguably the most portable, visceral and emotive. It has a directness that few others have, capable of being intimate or sounding like an orchestra. In the hands of composer/guitarist Keith Driskill the guitar is a bringer of intimate moments, some wistful, some romantic, and some dreamlike... A Time Of Innocence is a lovely, soothing and harmonic album, and well worth seeking out.

The RajMan Review
Keith Driskill is a simple man who lives a simple life with his four children in Spanish Fork, Utah, and that simplicity comes through on his latest album of solo acoustic guitar instrumentals.

The CD contains nine intricately crafted and lyrically beautiful compositions that, as the album title implies, will quietly whisk you away to a kinder, gentler, more peaceful and tranquil state of mind. Driskill’s complex finger-picking style yields sensitive lead lines, dynamic bass rhythms, and soothing arpeggios that slowly and softly work their way into your soul. Before you know it, you’re enveloped in a serene sanctuary of sound.

The recording impresses on a technical level as well. The audio quality is clear and crisp, and the mix is balanced well. The result is pure sonic heaven.

At just about 40 minutes in length, the album is short enough to enjoy several times over, especially if you have a long commute. And this is one of those albums that you won’t tire of listening to endlessly.

This is a very casual album. Nothing is hurried here. There are no bold statements. There is just a very calming lineup of great acoustical guitar pieces. A straightforward approach to great background music on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Very nice.

From MainlyPiano
"A Time of Innocence" is the charming and delightful debut recording of acoustic guitarist Keith Driskill. A collection of nine original guitar solos played in the “finger-picking” style, the pieces have the sound of someone playing from the heart in his own private space, free to be completely candid and honest. Warmth and contentment flow through the music, providing a respite from the noise and hectic pace of contemporary life. This is a great album for unwinding, reading, massage, or any quiet activity where a touch of gentle beauty would make the experience even more relaxing or rewarding. The tempo of the music is easy-going and unhurried with simple, heartfelt melodies and uncomplicated rhythms.

"A Time of Innocence" begins with “Miracle of Forgiveness,” a dreamy, enchanting piece that sets the pace and mood of the album. “Lover’s Farewell” is hauntingly beautiful and touches the heart with sadness and loss. I love this piece! Muir Woods is a magical area on the Northern California coast, and Driskill’s song captures the serene majesty of the redwoods and the surrounding area. The title tune beautifully depicts the wide-eyed innocence of young children and their uncomplicated charm. “Moonlight Lullaby” is a tender love song that would wrap a child in warmth and security, free from care or fear. I love this one, too! “Melancholy Moment” is bittersweet and soothing as it expresses deep feelings through the voice of the guitar. “My Angel Friend” is my favorite track. Happy and secure in the knowledge (or belief) of being protected and cared for by an unseen friend, the piece overflows with peace and serenity. “Fireflies” expresses a joyful, carefree sense of freedom and tranquility. “Twilight” closes the set as quietly and gently as it began, conveying the peaceful ending of a very good day.

"A Time of Innocence" is a very impressive debut - not only for Keith Driskill’s mastery of his guitar, but also for his artistry in keeping the music simple and from the heart. If you love acoustic guitar, this album is a must! Very highly recommended!

Review excerpt from Music & Media Focus
“A Time Of Innocence” is solo acoustic guitar played fingerstyle, which means it is plucked in melodic patterns sometimes intricate and sometimes simple, rather than strummed. It is also instrumental, although it conveys a meaningfulness that speaks directly to the emotions rather than the analytical mind. From the first notes of the opening song “Miracle Of Forgiveness” I felt deeply moved and it set a tone that continued throughout the recording. This music has a lot of what I would call “heart quality” and I kept thinking that this particular song would make a wonderful soundtrack to a tender moment in a movie.

Keith’s music which has been described as “new age with a touch of folk” has a natural earthy feeling and flow that I’ve always enjoyed in classic Windham Hill albums over the years. While an accomplished player, you don’t get the feeling that he is trying to dazzle you with virtuosity, but that the music is there to express something more sublime. There is a spirituality that comes through in his playing and is further reflected in his belief that, “music should be there to lift us, to deepen us and awaken us to a consciousness above the mundane routines of life.” Like the title implies, this is a sweet gentle recording that would be perfect for starting the day, winding down in the evening, or whenever a peaceful musical oasis is desired .
