Album Notes
After the strong debut release - Broken Voyage - electronic artist Kelly David presents a big stride forward in his sound design, composition and flow. Going further into the themes of exotic distant places, here he draws on the specter found in the forbidding S.E. Asian jungles and to a distant past when the mighty Khmer civilization ruled from an immense temple city called Angkor.

In a similar way that David Parsons taps into an atmosphere and spiritual dimension of a geographic region, Kelly uses harmonically rich textures and surreal sounds along with ethnic-inspired rhythmic passages to express a travelogue of mystery, impending danger and the vastness of an area that is still being understood and explored on many levels today. Sonically, the CD is created primarily on analog modular instruments which results in a warm and rich sound. Mastered by Steve Roach.

Kelly David, Colorado based composer, has released his second full length album "Angkor" back in 2006 on his own Rocky Mountain Records. Kelly portrays here through his adventurous sonic visions spirituality, mystery and architecture of Angkor, the capital of the Khmer Empire and civilization. The ruins of Angkor, located in Cambodia, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The album starts with exotically perfumed "Winds Of Change", spiced by assorted bell sounds and bird calls, with always evolving structure layered into a spectacularly dramatic manner. Faraway sonic expedition just begun!!! Deeper drones with cavernous water sounds and other field recordings are the base for "Outside The Temperate Zone", a slowly culminating composition becoming more pompous and immersive and as much colossal as Angkor Wat, the temple complex of Angkor. "Temple Of Dawn" unfolds around minimal structure painted with deeply primordial colors of different percussions, bells and magically fragranced soundscapes. Minimal, yet richly sculpted and strongly meditative composition! "Living In Interesting Times" unfolds quite disturbing, but soon passing into deeper drifting level evoking immense mysterious sceneries. The next composition, "Wisdom Of The Ancients", brings to mind sacred ceremonial journey in tropical rainforest. "Echoes Of Angkor" attracts with minimal, drifting intro, soon moving from tinkling electronics to rather active and eclectic sharp sonic experiments incorporating also generated choir-like sounds and singing bowls, highly meditative and penetrating piece using wide range of mysterious fragrances! Sonic mystery overlaps also into "Empire Lost", this track is enriched by various distant voices and whispers and also by distorted drones that ocassionally step in and fade away. This ever-changing texture involves except floating washes also few industrialized and alien soundscapes. Absolutely exciting and adventurous epilogue!!! And just the same can be said on the whole "Angkor" album, on which Kelly David masterfully merges the ancient and the present, "Angkor" is deep, mysterious and powerful!!! Mastered at the Timeroom by Steve Roach. And I still dream about the next sonic wizardry by Kelly David...
