Kendra Ross - Delectable Debut
Kendra Ross – New Voice Review
With Kendra Ross what you see (or rather what you hear) is what you get. From the playfully sexy neo-soul/hip-hop banger “Can I Keep It” (an updated homage of sorts to A Tribe Called Quest’s Can I Kick It) featuring Talib Kweli and Tiye Phoenix, to the almost ethereal “Has to Be”, Kendra’s vocals flow effortlessly affirming that she is not a studio made singer but a sultry siren and burgeoning force to be reckoned with…all this while putting on full display sexy, introspective, and insightful lyrics sure to enrapture the listener.

Since hearing her drop some background vocals on Talib Kweli’s Quality album, fans have been waiting to see what Kendra could do on her own project and she serves up a cornucopia of sounds sure to satiate your ears desire for authentic and genuine music that emanates from a sincere place and leaves you satisfied with her debut effort.

Her throaty and sultry voice reminds one of a trendier and more accessible Phylis Hyman and with live instrumentation throughout the album and her tribute to a bygone era in jazz (one of the jazz singer) “Man You Love Blues”, she does nothing to dispel that notion. Throughout the album, a synergy is created which only affirms her place as a true vocalist with a great instrument, herself.

With thoughtful lyrics that get to the point, Kendra manages to evoke emotion with “I’m So Okay” and lay down the law with the independent black woman theme song “Real Deal!” Though both of these songs titles are sure to join the woman’s lexicon of one-liners to hurl at the offending man in your life, you’d miss the point if you stop there and not get the message that this woman is about growing and healing and living beyond the pain or games in relationships.

Personally I like a little H.O.D. (Hint of Desparation) and L.A.P. (Longing And Pain) in my music! I want to feel that pain, that love that is so strong or that passion that is so deep that I’m right there with you! Well, “Has to Be”, an open, light almost orchestral piece that laments a woman’s fear of love and “1st Time”, which celebrates that magical moment where folks have sweat glistening all over they bawdy, take you there like the Staples Singers! Moody, introspective and sexy…now that’s one hell of a combination (and if you look at the album cover you know what I mean) and these two songs exemplify that side that makes you want to get that cup of joe (coffee to you laymen) on a rainy day and just “talk” or whatever all day!

A highlight of the album is the riding jam (song you put on in your car and roll down the highway) “Why Can’t I See”, Ross’ duet with underground neo-soul dude Eric Roberson. Kendra shines as the two of them make a little studio magic melding easily with the H2O produced track…check how smooth she sounds on this song…it’s intoxicating!

Not to be overlooked are Ross’ power to the people hype track, “I Got You” which exalts having your people’s back, a message some folk really NEED to hear right about now and the title track “New Voice” an empowerment song about being independent in thought and not letting others define you.

At a time when many artists have forgotten that music can entertain AND enlighten Kendra is mindful of that fact and does her best to give you both. Some albums settle into a groove and you just lay back for the ride, New Voice is like music ala carte. You don’t have to stare and slobber on yourself while the goods sit there steaming in front of you. You can take what you like and enjoy, but no matter what you sample you’ll be getting a good helping of music sure to fix your “real music” jones.

A cool artist
I like this album and the artist, and envy those who have had the opportunity 2 hear Kendra live. Kendra has a warm and soulful voice which stands out. I appreciate the diversity of the album, and I'm glad to have purchased it. It contains ballads and laidback interludes as well as midtempo and funky uptempo songs - works fine as a whole. Wish KR all the best and good luck with new projects.

Setting a new standard of quality and excellence!
QUALITY in every sense of the word! From the music to the lyrics even right down to the artwork, this project is as professional as they come. It sets a new standard for independent projects...and that bar has been set very high! This cd really has a bit of something for everybody: soul, jazz, r&b, a li'l hip hop, some social consciousness, a dash of empowerment and just GOOD songs that take Kendra's message straight to the people! The rich, soulful tone of her voice is one that is reminiscent of a past era, but her songwriting is relevant and fresh. I am really proud of this project as a fan, a friend and also a contributor. This is definitely one for the collection, so GET YOUR COPY TODAY!!!! BIG THINGS POPPIN' NOW, Ms. ROSS!!!! DO IT UP!!
