Skandi (Original Soundtrack)

by Kerry Muzzey

"Skandi" is the score for a 6-episode Scandinavian crime drama series... that doesn't exist. Modern classical and film composer Kerry Muzzey blends synths and sound design with electric and acoustic cello in this score to an imaginary TV series.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A few years ago I got sucked into the Scandinavian/Nordic Noir TV craze: whether it was a family drama shot in the Danish countryside or a slow-burn crime thriller that took place in remote Iceland, I fell in love with the genre. Part of my love for this genre is that the place itself becomes a character in the story, but the thing that I noticed time and time again is how the score is allowed to be a character in each series. Because there's time for a story to unfold slowly, there's also time for the score to work its magic. "Moody and dark and melancholy" takes priority over the "bigger, faster, louder" that we hear in so many network TV series.

A couple years ago I was watching one of these Scandi series and it was pretty good, but I wasn't crazy about the music. And I thought, "I would've scored that show differently. Hey, what if.... what if I wrote the score that I would've wanted to hear in that series?" And so I did. I came up with my own storyline that my music would underscore, and I set out to write something that felt like the complete score to a 6-episode Scandi crime drama, but without the actual TV series.

The end result is this album, "Skandi." I've veered away from orchestral writing with this album and instead have relied almost entirely on synths and electronic elements, with the exception of some acoustic and electric cello performed by cellist and composer Peter Gregson.

Dive in and enjoy the melancholy.
