Album Notes
The Collins – Allvin New Directions Quartet came to be after four musicians playing the Detroit music scene at numerous venues and in numerous styles, got together and decided to meld all of their talents and creativity into a diverse musical genre. It is the culmination of years of exploration and love for music in all its manifestations. Performing together since 2009 Christopher Collins and Kerstin Allvin have been producing music that combines both of their talents and expertise. Kerstin is highly in demand, performing classical, jazz, pop and her own music with various ensembles, symphony orchestras and theaters in Detroit and around the world. Chris performs around the world as a leader and soloist. His love of jazz, orchestral, and world music shape his distinctive voice. He is Artistic Director of the Detroit Jazz Festival. The quartet has performed at the Steinway Jazz Café, the American Harp Society National Conference in New Orleans as the closing featured artists, the Flint Institute of Arts and many other venues. All four members are extras in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Michigan Opera Theater, and all four have performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival. The Quartet’s music is a refreshing combination of jazz, classical, world and contemporary music that include influences of their native city of Detroit where they all work, perform, teach and create. In February 2015 the group released this first CD titled “Detours.” The CD contains music arranged by Christopher Collins, “Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite” by Paul Reade and “Jigs,” a collection of traditional jigs that morph through improvisation and composition into a combination of many musical contemporary ideas. The title work on the CD, “Detours,” was originally written for Kerstin Allvin and her flute/harp duo by James Hartway. Hartway was then asked to arrange it for the New Directions Quartet and the work has been performed to fabulous audience response. The three movement piece makes programmatic reference to elements of the city of Detroit in its motives, melodies and movement titles.
