Album Notes
Keruna is a vocal ensemble from Belgium, born from the desire of six women to celebrate life through song... and share this song with the world.

The name Keruna is derived from the Sanskrit word karuna, 'endless compassion'. To live in karuna is to understand that all our actions, however small they may seem, touch the lives of others. Just like a small pebble in the water creates a circle of ripples, expanding all the way to the river's banks, our human intention touches everyone around us. Likewise, the intention of Keruna's song - an intention of endless compassion for all living beings - may touch the hearts of all those who listen, filling it with joy and gratitude.

Each with her own timbre and unique sound, the six women of Keruna blend their voices into a colourful, polyphonic texture of vocal creations. Where appropriate, their voices are gently supported by the sound of authentic musical instruments such as Native American flutes, drums, rattles and percussion.

Keruna taps from a wide source of traditional songs from all over the world, because those traditionals are the quintessential carriers of the universal human nature. Every tradition, whether from the North or the South, from faraway or closer to home, offers songs to say thanks or to celebrate, songs of love and grief, of awe and ecstasy, of hope and faith. In this sense, Keruna's songs are an invitation for everyone to make contact again, with themselves and with other people, beyond descent or religion, from heart to heart.

The women of Keruna are currently: Anja Desmet, Marijke Goossens, Mieke Polfliet, Patricia Van Cutsem and Veva Gerard.
