Album Notes
A highly skilled performance does not necessarily translate into music. The musicians first commit during this session. Extensive liner notes would be superfluous because the music speaks eloquently for itself. However, the general picture shows a young pianist with maturity far beyond his twenty-eight years of age, totally in control of the elements that identify greatness, i.e., mastery of time and space, economy of means, speech-like phrasing, and controlled emotion. Moreover, his musical vocabulary covers an enormous span from grooves reflective of Ahmad Jamal’s early years, to today’s cutting edge concept of ignoring the barlines established by fixed meters, for the purpose of dividing standard meter in fresh creative ways. Kevin Bales transcends the tyranny of barlines, linking past with the future in challenging inventive melodious and rhythmically diverse ways. Even the lay person can access this music, because the underlying foundation is always feeling. Continuity and logic are never sacrificed for mere technique. Technique is utilized as a means not an end. He lets the music unfold in a manner so natural, that the listener automatically becomes engulfed in climatic tension and release. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of playing with Kevin and watching him grow. Therefore, I can say with a great deal of authority that as superb as this, his first recording is, believe me, it is only the tip of the iceberg, a beautiful omen of continuously wonderful things to come. The other rhythm section members, Ricky Ravelo on bass, and Pete Miles on drums, have been working with Kevin for quite a few years and function as a marvelous anchor for Kevin’s flights of fantasy and unrelenting grooves. Marcus Printup, one of today’s finest young trumpet stars, rounds out the set with brilliantly compatible solo and ensemble performances. When it all comes together like this, you have music honest and true, free from unnecessary contrivances, culminating in a virtual work of art. Listen to Kevin Bales, a musical messenger, a fresh voice.

Kevin Bales- The First Day
A young Kevin Bales, yes, yet he plays with the strength of a giant and the tenderness of a newborn.
Eagerly awaiting the next release!

Stunning first CD
My definition of a perfect afternoon-- listening to Kevin Bales play piano in my living room. This is the next best thing! Kevin's playing breathes fresh new life into all that he touches. It's a delightful stream-of-consciousness romp that alternately soothes and excites. From standards to originals, each track is superb.

Kevin blends the past, present, and future of jazz - and the sidemen, especially Marcus Printup, make this album a sheer delight.

Hurry, Kevin, we want more!

Kevin is the past, present and future of jazz piano playing. His connection with the other musicians, especially Marcus Printup, make this a CD that both soothes and exhilarates - often in the same track!

What can I say? Get it and experience joy.
