Album Notes
Kevin doesn't just go with the flow, but pushes against what seems to be the inevitability of futility and moral compromise. Checkmate feels the pulsing rhythms of guitar and djembe, comparing life's challenges to a game of chess. He runs through the cornfields as a child in Cornbread, recalling meals of fried catfish and pork chops with cornbread on the side. While we're busy laughing, he slips in a quick jibe against ethanol. We're surrounded by beauty in Plant a Dream, then brought inward in Unaware, while haunted by a stirring guitar line. It's hard to say "goodbye" when we've lost someone we love, but Kevin does it with grace in Mississippi Rolling and Song for Elizabeth. It's also tough to say "goodnight" and drive away from family living far away, as we hear in Goodnight From a Distance. We delight in the playfulness of the piano in Skating and the unique use of language and unexpected genre in Ukrainian Reggae. A final sound of triumph shines out in Solidarity, encouraging us to remain united in our common goals and aspirations.
