ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Kevin Christensen has been dipping his toes in a variety of music-related pools his entire life. He has toured as a musician, worked as a live sound engineer, performed in clubs as a DJ, and he's also been on the corporate side of the music business. Today he is a musician/producer living in Portland, OR composing music for film and television who just released his debut album "portion of space."

"With this first solo project," Kevin says, "I'm exploring and trying to find my niche. The music is a blend of real instruments and computer generated sounds which cover a range of styles in the contemporary neighborhood... chill-out, dub, electronica, lounge, trip-hop, jazz... sometimes a feel-good ride... sometimes a darker element... often something else altogether... but always groovy."

And groovy it is! It's something like Ambient and Dub meet Ethereal New Age on the way to the Trip-Hop Electro-Lounge! Kevin blends these elements into a sound that can get your head bobbing, but can also be interestingly cinematic and delicate in nature.

There's a lot of diverse material here. The overall harmonization of melody and rhythm is enthralling and effectively displays his talent as a musician. You hear chunks of global, ethnic snippets, Eastern-rhythms and futuristic synths weaving over both up-tempo and more ambient-style tracks. There's dub-influenced experimental electronica as well as layered melodic hooks over funky, driving rhythms. And yet other times it may range from trip-hop to something you would find buried in a tasty movie soundtrack.

Warm and detailed, "portion of space" manages to be complex and accessible all together in a glossy production package that showcases Kevin's skill as a producer. There are moments of extreme dense energy, euphoria and excitement, but by and large, the album is more of a laid-back trip to another world and perfect for sipping martinis in a funky chill-out bar.

Kudos to Kevin on his debut effort! We'll certainly be hearing more of him. The enchanting and tasty amalgamations of sound make this a must-have CD.

Strange and wonderful
This is an excellent CD. Everything in it makes sense with itself, but not necessarily with the outside world. What I'm trying to say is that it's uniquely different (and awesome), but still very accessible. A real tightrope to walk, that is. The only flaw I hear is track 5, "boonuckle", which doesn't fit with the rest - it takes me out of the mood of the album. Other than that, I love it!

Interesting and imaginitive
This CD from Kevin Christensen is one of the most creative and innovative ones I have heard in a long time. Each track is very different than the others and all act as a showcase for Kevin's vivid musical imagination and his high quality mixes. Combining synth sounds with live musicianship shows a unique and original talent. Gotta hear more!

Nice trip through space, rich and tastfully done
Fun little ride! A mix of all the sounds I love to groove too. It starts loungy with some nice cocktail trax’s, easy to chill too but not boring as many lounge discs can get to be. It’s not overly repetative which can turn off my older friends who aren’t hip to today’s modern lounge music. Later in the disc it slips into some classic guitar licks, like a trip along the Mediterranean, truly showing some skill not found in a synth lab full of looped samples. Pool Party is layered with fat and juice sounds that are interesting and fun to explore, I wonder how many layers went into this track? The closing Napa Aftermath is fantastic departure from this eclectic journey of sounds and visions. I look forward to seeing what comes next from the newcomer; this first release is certainly an example of someone with plenty of talent to share.

Ordered it from Pay Pal - Can't believe what it did to me!
Can't get enough, seemed to be about 10 minutes passed, and I look up and the hour is gone. figured the second time I listened to it might be different. Hard to get any work done around here. Understand it's a debuet, kudo's Kevin, can't wait to hear more from you.
