ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I started playing the fiddle at St. Bernard’s primary school where we had our own Ceili band, and after a few years I joined the local CCE branch at St Wilfrid’s when I was 12 years of age. This got me started playing in competitions both solo, and with ceili bands. I have won numerous Junior All Britain titles and 12 Senior All-Britain titles; I also won the Senior All-Ireland Fiddle title in 1996. I moved to London from my native Manchester in the mid 1980’s and met, played with and learnt from some great musicians in the fantastic session scene that was there. It was in the London sessions that I built up a lot of my repertoire of tunes and this is reflected in some of the choices I have made here on this CD.
I really enjoy playing in ceili bands and the discipline that goes towards putting them together for performing at competitions as well as the live performance at ceilis, where you get great feedback from the floor. I have competed with many different ceili bands over the years including St Malachy’s Band in Manchester, The Manchester Ceili Band and The Knocknagow in London. In both Manchester and London I have also spent a lot of time teaching up and coming musicians and managed to actually teach a few All- Ireland Champions as well.
In addition to playing extensively in the UK and Ireland, I have played at concerts in Austria, France, Hungary and the US. When growing up, I really enjoyed listening to the recordings of Kathleen Collins, Liz Carroll and Tommy Maguire, Finbarr Dwyer, Joe Cooley, Noel Hill and Tony Linnane and learnt many tunes from listening to these.
I have always believed in the tradition of Irish music and have tried to reflect this in this recording.
