Album Notes
STARLINER is a WALL of SOUND with boy-meets-girl glam vocals!

“Fresh mellow pop tunes with a surf rock sound"
- The Province (Canada)

“One of Vancouver's great pop hopes." – Discorder Magazine (Canada)

“They have a really great knack with a song and a hook that seems totally natural and is really, really quite appealing” - CFOX Radio (Canada)

“Rocks like the Ronettes meets the Rolling Stones. Bliss out!" - The Vancouver Sun (Canada)

Kick in the Eye is a indie rock duo from Vancouver, Donnie Lochrie - guitar, vocals and Marian Lochrie - bass guitar, vocals. They describe themselves as Beach Boys plus T-Rex, Mathew Sweet and Kasabian equals their sound. But, they seem to sound like Mates of State if they recorded in the 60s and 70s. That’s the beauty of Kick In The Eye they have that Wall of Sound Phil Spector feel going on but still have a good modern indie feel to it. Tracks like “Honey Bee” and “Aftersound” invoke the sound of 70s quite nicely. Being Kick In The Eye’s third album it is quite good. It is light and fresh and just a lot of fun. - Comfortzone .com

Kick in the Eye: Starliner

Kick in the Eye are from British Columbia, Canada. They are Donnie Lochrie, (guitar/vocals) and Marian Lochrie (bass guitar/vocals). I was attracted to reviewing this because the band name is that of one of my favourite Bauhaus tracks, although I thought they may have got the name elsewhere. A look through their influences on MySpace, however, reveals that Bauhaus are there in the list, although I can't detect any Bauhaus type sounds on the CD, which I'm sure most people will think is a good thing!
The lo-fi sound of the CD does bring the sound of the Jesus and Mary Chain to mind, but I think that's due to the sound quality. Their tracks are poppy / indie, but much more cheerful than the Mary Chain. It's an enjoyable guitar based romp that has already been out for some time in their native Canada, but, with the band starting to promote themselves on the international scene, they're going to spread the fun around a bit. Lyrically they have a variety of subject matter, from the B-movie sci fi of 'City on the Edge of Time' to driving along listening to the radio in 'Full Spectrum', not to mention their ode to their family traditions at Christmas of 'Hopin' for Snow' which has a groovy repetitive disco beat to it. They are well worth looking out for and have two more releases due for 2007. You can always have a listen to their MP3 of 'Honey Bee', one of the tracks on this album, on their website to get an idea of what they sound like.

NOTE: All Kick in the Eye CDs come in eco-friendly packaging, which is recyclable, biodegradeable, and free from plastic trays.

BIO: 100% Anti-Establishment! Kick in the Eye is a indie rock duo from Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Donnie and Marian strive to make Do-It-Yourself a way of life. DIY is the New Social Movement. It has many positive consequences and helps protect everything from the environment to your health to the local economy. Help stop corporate totalitarianism! Please try to trade with or buy from as many local or independent producers as possible, including food, clothing, gifts, music, art, and other entertainment. To combat the general malaise afflicting western society, Donnie and Marian are making alternative rock you can really dance to: "I don't think I've ever smiled this much after hearing something, nor had the urge to get out of my chair and dance around like a dumbass!" Kick in the Eye has garnered a reputation of being a "hilarious, superfunny band" with ultra-catchy hooks and sometimes bizarre subject matter. Their two previous CDs were well received critically, charting nationally and internationally. Kick in the Eye has performed at Music West and North by NorthEast, and have toured extensively on the West Coast, opening for such acts as The Soledad Brothers, Mr. Airplane Man, and The Hard Rock Miners.
