ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
King Curly: Proudly Serving the Public since 2000, k.d lang had them open her Australian tour. Paul Kelly reckons "their name should be shouted from the roof-tops." and Harry Angus from the Cat Empire says they're "so strikingly original, musically and lyrically, that they can't really be compared to anything."

King Curly is contemporary Australian songwriting at its finest, voiced through a highly original, loose and sparse style of instrumentation aptly termed “Garage-Cabaret”. Their work is a refreshing anomaly on our musical landscape. Its apparent creative naivety masks exceptional skill that draws as much from the tragically misunderstood Tiny Tim as the gritty storytelling of Lou Reed.

Hailing from the Blue Mountains in NSW, King Curly is the invention of Steve Appel - one of the great enigmas of Australian music. For a decade, his slowly evolving, chiefly acoustic ensemble has been quietly capturing the hearts of fans including some of biggest names in the business.

This new King Curly album, “Night Parrots” features
songs about night parrots, insects, airport hotels and other interesting things,
sung by performers we like, including Elana Stone (Sydney based jazz
singer), Laurie McClain (Nashville based singer / songwriter), Mikelangelo
(Black Sea Gentlemen/Tinstar) and Oscar McBlack (Hell City Glamours),
who joins Steve in a duet.

The album was extensively rehearsed over several days at Zoe's house with
the core band of Steve Appel, Dan Creighton, Elmo Reed, Zoe Hauptmann,
John Hibbard, James Hauptmann, Evan Mannell and friends before being
recorded the old fashioned way – live, quick and dirty – at Brendan
Gallagher's Gigpiglet Studios and in Steve's back shed. Greg J Walker
( Machine Translations ) and Steve Francis mixed the album.
