ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Eastern Breezes, Western Winds came to us through natural selection ~ it seemed that many of the songs in this collection referred to the wind in some way, or the way the wind stirs up the water. The central songs of this Album are Schubert's Suleika I and Suleika II, pieces based on poetry by Marianne von Willemer, a woman who had an artistic relationship with Goethe. They wrote to each other and in their collaborations, referred to each other as Suleika and Hatem, a pair of Persian lovers. They met only once in person and after that never saw each other again. Ms. Willemer did indeed write the poems but they are often attributed to Goethe. The songs describe the East wind and ask that it bring a lover...but the truth is revealed when at the end, the poets states that nothing could compare to a lover's breath to heal a broken heart, not even the wind. The second piece bids the West wind to tell her lover that his love is her life... they both truly capture the underlying pulse and longing in life and love. In keeping with the them of the winds, two of the Haydn pieces also reference the wind, in Fidelity and Sailor's Song, from his well known English Canzonettas. Then we come to Tchaikovsky, whose music can always emanate the wind, whether it be a cool breeze that will lull a baby to sleep in their cradle, a hot and sticky evening causing a sleepless night, or the soaring melodies in a song that calls to a lover, "It's all for you!" Finally, part of Reynaldo Hahn's beautiful Venezia song cycle is captured here ~ and once again the wind is felt, rocking the gondola while the beautiful Nineta is seduced...closing with a description of the way Spring makes us feel. We hope you will enjoy this CD and listen often!
