Album Notes
Although Phil and I have had few opportunities to make music together over the last two decades (except for one tune demonstrations at vocal jazz festivals, workshops, etc.), when we did, the instant-fun interplay resulted in the threat “Hey, let’s do a recording someday!” Needless to say, “IT’S ABOUT TIME!”

Phil’s piano playing is powerful and playful, swingin’ and sublime, and his ongoing quest for quality music-making whether as a player, arranger or teacher is abundantly evident.

I think Phil and I share three important ideas when it comes to making jazz music: 1) Swing’s the thing! 2) Lyrics are important... choose your tunes carefully and treat the text with sensitivity, and 3) Have fun!

Phil and I have been down a couple of roads together (me in a car and Phil on his Harley!) and I’m so happy we were able to bring this musical collaboration to you!
-Kirby Shaw

Kirby and I have been friends since the early days of vocal jazz in California in the 70’s. He was/is a shining musical talent both as a writer and a performer. The chance to spend time together recording was a great opportunity to renew a personal and musical friendship, one I’m glad we didn’t miss.

Time after time (now there’s an appropriate song title!) in our sessions, Kirby came up with fresh, creative improvisations that renewed my admiration for his talents. We didn’t rehearse anything (except endings in some cases) and the whole process of interplay beween us was a joy to experience.

Thanks, Kirby, for pursuing this long-ago mentioned idea to it’s happy musical conclusion.
