Album Notes
Kirsten Allstaff is one of the teachers and directors at The Online Academy of Irish Music. She is an acclaimed flute and tin- whistle player who has tutored at The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University Limerick for the past ten years. Kirsten has played music throughout Ireland, Europe, North America and Asia with various music groups and Irish dance shows.

Her sets are a blend of Scottish and Irish melodies on the concert flute, accompanied with bodhrán, strings and piano. Two stalwarts of the Irish music tradition; John Joe Kelly (Flook) on bodhrán and Eoin O'Neill on bouzouki compliment and support her flute playing throughout the album. Mhairi Hall on piano brings a Scottish flavour to a few of her tunes. Other fine accompanying musicians include Jean Damei on guitar, Adam Shapiro on fiddle and Jon O'Connell on double bass.

Gallowglass is Kirsten's debut solo album. The Gallowglass were a group of Scottish warriors who settled in Ireland during the 13th - 16th centuries. They were hired by Irish chieftains to fight on their behalf against opposing clans. They soon infiltrated into Irish society and in time there came to be many native irish Gallowglass who possessed the fine infantry skills of the original Scottish warriors. As Scots, they were Gaels who shared a common language and culture with the Irish; the Irish called them 'GallGaeil' (foreign Gaels). As a Scot living in Ireland this title resonates with Kirsten; it also happens to be the name of her favorite Jig which features on track one. This album celebrates the traditional music of Scotland and Ireland.
