ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Fusion Rock From the Land of Down Under.

‘The Third Room’ is KJ Apa’s debut album, published by BPC Music in Epsom, New Zealand. The tracks were written by KJ over the winter months and recorded in October 2011 at Big Planet Studios. The album reflects modern free-flowing fusion-rock beats with a hint of Latin rock in some tracks. ‘The Third Room’ brings with it a fresh perspective on rock - overlaying the traditional genre with hip-hop, middle eastern and cafe-del-mar beats resulting in a rich landscape of sublime musical feast. KJ’s distinctive guitar solos are powerful, emotive and purposeful, which naturally leads the listener to feel included, pampered, and motivated - and at times, challenged. The music is an obvious reflection of KJ’s sensitivity, compassion and excitement for life.

Guitar Prodigy.

At the age of 13 in 2010, KJ was described in the NZ media as the 13 year old guitar prodigy, having won a national talent competition, Westfield’s Style Pasifika’s ‘Five Minutes of Fame’ which led him to perform in front of 6,000 people at the Vector Arena in Auckland. At this event, he shared the stage with Annie Crummer, Mark Williams, the Dawn Raid Crew, and many others. Since then, KJ has invested his time writing his own music and recording in the studio.

KJ’s Profile:

My name is Keneti James FitzGerald Apa, I’m 14 years old and this is my debut album. It all started three years ago when I heard a mate playing Hotel California. I immediately knew that I wanted to be the best guitarist in the world. I still do!

Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Van Halen are some of my favourite guitarists but Joe has the had the biggest impact on my playing. The feeling I get when I listen to his songs is indescribable. Although many of my songs have a similar style, I try very, very hard not to sound like him! At times I can see the vivid colours inside Carols Santana’s music and often get the feeling of living inside the groove’ of certain musical phrases. “Europa - Earth’s Cry, Heaven’s Smile” has s few of these – it was actually one of the first pieces I learned. His music has a certain spiritual element that I can connect to. Being bought up in a Christian home, I am aware of God’s presence and speak to Him through my music. I thank God for my talent and know for certain that I wouldn’t be who I am now and where I need to be, if it wasn’t for Him. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Phil 4:13.
Thank-you for listening to my music.

Individual Track Information.

Thinking of You: This is a song about the different side of love. Thank-you to Ari for her input into this track.

Greenboot’s Cave: I was inspired to write this track after watching a documentary about Mt Everest where a man called David Sharp tragically froze to death in an edifice called Greenboot’s Cave. The music expresses the hopeless situation of him freezing to death with on-one able to help him.

The Third Room: This song had been on my mind for a very long time…even before I started recording this album. It describes the Third Room (God’s room) which no-one can enter, with unimaginable things inside. But of course…I am imagining the unimaginable. God’s room is really inside our hearts.

Lost Dawn: I once had a vision that showed lots of people heading towards certain destruction but in the end they were saved.

Beefy T: I envisage myself running onto the rugby field feeling pumped and ready for action! Say no more.

Happy Daze: A perfect scenario to experience this track would be cruising on a hot sunny day in Samoa with your dog chilling in the back seat.

Darrio Express: This is a fast moving track named after the guitar strings I use “Darrio”. My strings are taking me on a wild express ride.

Stuck in the Moment: I wrote this piece after hearing that my dog Furby could be going blind.

Midnight Thoughts: This was the first piece I wrote. I’m not sure why I gave it that name but it just sounded right!
