ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
With masterful arranging, traditional and original compositions, and wonderful moments of collective improvisation, Klezmerati paints a sweeping portrait of klezmer, different from what we’ve heard before. Members of the ensemble from the United States, Canada, Ukraine, and Bulgaria manage a unifying pictorial soundscape that is at once familiar and engaging. All are immersed in the true nature of the music and style — artful, delicate and powerful.

Guitarist and bassist Henry Shapiro, with his background as a film score composer, moves the musicians from scene to scene, building on and through the many moods and transitions on every track. Each of the virtuosic musicians perform superlatively on this world class acoustic recording, to a place deep and connected.

There are some influences and ingredients from other musical styles, particularly in the original compositions. But no more than can be found on the recordings of any era. These elements are woven into a traditional klezmer background, seamlessly merging to an artistic and sublime whole.

Recorded in Toronto and Pittsburgh, this is a musical tour de force, a worthy new example of klezmer music and modern acoustic recording.
