Album Notes

The mere act of surviving on a day to day basis is the foundation from which a true artist builds her craft. Multi-talented KOKOH is no exception to this rule. Her dynamic vocal styling and stirring songs creatively reflects the ups and downs of her life experiences. A crafty blend of sensual soul is KOKOH's vibrant first time tour-de-force.

To understand where KOKOH is right now is just half the equation. The other half lies in where she came from: this artist possesses a unique history. The daughter of two musicians, KOKOH was born in the heart of Texas and began singing at the age of eighteen months. Being brought up in an environment that treasures the true artistic value of musicianship and revels in the mastering of all of your musical skill has had a momentous affect on KOKOH. KOKOH extensively trained in classical ballet and modern dance and attended Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts, along with such artist as Erykah Badu, Roy Hargrove and Norah Jones.

At the age of 19 KOKOH started and headlined her own jazz band, which caught the eye of label executive Kevin Evans. KOKOH was able to record one album under the RCA label, but unfortunately due to the climate of the entertainment industry, the label could not put out the album and the world lost out on a dynamic performer. But with Kevin Evans as Executive Prodcer, magic had already happened and all was not lost. Leon Ware wrote and produced most of the project. The “Sire of Soul” who gave us songs such as: “I Want You”- Marvin Gaye; “Inside My Love”- Minnie Riperton; “Sumthin’ Sumthin’”-Maxwell & “I Know It’s You”- Donny Hathaway, still has the “right” ingredients. These two soul sapiens came together and stirred up things with songs like “How Far Can We Go”, it’s the hit single from her debut album “Meltdown”. This cut has seduced its’ way to the U.K. and landed a spot on the “Soul Exposed” compilation cd.

Not affected by the state of the entertainment industry, KOKOH's musical development exploded and she began channeling her energy into writing and producing her own music. KOKOH moved away from her jazzy sounds and developed a new sound of soulful alternative rock. Only to return safely and soulfully home. Although this cd is her first she is no newcomer to the industry. Kokoh has shared the stage with artists such as Charlie Wilson & The Gap Band; Kieth Sweat; Christopher Williams; Norwood Young and others as a backup singer. Kokoh even had the honor to share her “own” stage & band with the legendary Phyllis Hyman. Since no label has welcomed her with open arms due to the “hype” on other genres of music. Kokoh feels her sound is “overlooked” but will never settle for being “under heard”.

Kokoh’s personal appeal and ability to reach a listener is a part of her whole package: a package that includes, most importantly, her distinctive vocals and a relaxed singing style. As well as her entrancing & captivating stage eloquence. Kokoh pulls on your pulse as she performs. It is as though she is speaking to you as she sings in a very intimate manner. These songs are coming straight from the heart and soul. Genuine and honest, KOKOH's music is a step in a new direction: a trajectory that will lead us on a delightfully fulfilling path of pleasurable soul.

I should have known this would have been a quality release due to who the producer was(the legendary Leon Ware), but this release went far beyond my expectations. Kokoh, stay in Mr. Ware's good graces and continue to be a recipient of his GROWN FOLK's music and you will be a star honey. Arrangements and the songwriting are top notch(as expected) and the voice of and angel, keep on doin' the damn thang, Kokoh, take a bow(you deserve it)!!!

Soul Sophistocation Perfection!
Every now and then a CD comes along that destroys your ears. Gives you goosebumps. Makes you shiver and reminds you that somebody, somewhere can produce soul perfection in this world of RnB dribble or as i like to call it by it's true name - Rubbish & Bland!

Well, this CD is produced by the legendary Leon Ware and the production is Scheer Class!! Kokoh's voice is ultra soulful and makes these mid-tempo gems sound like absolute Soul Sophistocation Perfection to the ears.

Just check the killer groove - HOW FAR CAN WE GO. A blinding mellow groove with a deep rich bass and an atmospheric groove that's sure to send shivers down the spine!

SPEECHLESS has a bassline to die for! The kind of Groove that is like the richest diamond transformed into a musical delight. AWESOME!

THAT TAKES ME TO HEAVEN is another sophistocated mellow groover that quite litterally will make you feel like your floating in the clouds. Superb!

MELTDOWN has Leon Ware stamped all over it. A deep rich bass line with a rhythm that makes you feel like being ultra sensuous with your loved one. Amazing!

As for the rest of the CD, every track is a winner. A couple of tracks have a latino vibe which also suits Kokoh's vocal style perfectly.

If i could, i'd give this 10 stars. Every lover of soul music should own this masterpiece of soul music!

Sadly CDs of this calibre are so few and far between nowadays in thid World of RnB dribble, so make sure you get yourself a copy and support a pure Soul artist so she will continue to release future CDs full of Sophistocated Soulful Gems!

I wrote this review last year for 4DaSoul radio. I just wanted to share it with a broader audience so that others could know about how wonderful KoKoh truly is. I hope you enjoy and I pray that KoKoh sees this as well.

Incense burning, a soft fall breeze that causes a sheer curtain to billow, a glass of wine, candles lit and smelling faintly of jasmine and sandalwood. You lay on your chaise lounge sipping wine while whispering sweet words of love into the ear of your lover. You look at him/her. She/He looks at you. You embrace and share a lingering passionate kiss. The music that flows softly from the CD player and sets the mood for this scene is Kokoh. “Meltdown” is the name chosen for this coterie of music. It’s absolutely beautiful.

At first glance, Kokoh appears to have stepped out of the pages of the “Ebony Fashion Fair” fashion show. She has a striking resemblance to a young Whitney Houston. She’s a platinum blonde rocking a natural short cut. She’s just lovely. Her music is even lovelier.

This is chill music, y’all. It can’t be called anything but. An entire album of slow jams! How long have we been waiting on this?!? She does it perfect justice. “Meltdown” is the title cut on the album. Have you ever felt like you just wanted to be inside of the one you love?

I don’t mean sexually (this time…wink). I’m talking about when you really love someone. I mean love them so much that you can barely breathe when they’re not around. When they are around, they take your breath away. You want to be so close; you just want to live inside of them. This is the album that you want playing when you feel that way. This is an album that makes you think of them in that way. The more I listen, the more I want to listen. Every single song is about love, real, true love.

“How Far Can We Go”, “I Get Weak”, “Speechless”, “That Takes Me To Heaven”, “Too Close to The Fire”, “Meltdown”, “I Fell In Love”, “Assurance” . I dare you to pick one song that you don’t like. You can’t! Her vocals are impeccable. The feel of Kokoh’s music, the vibe you get when you listen to it, is reminiscent of Anita Baker. How many artists can say that they are in enough of a league to be compared to Anita? Not many.

I strongly suggest picking the album up if you don’t already have it. If you do have it, tell someone that doesn’t have it to go get it. This is the soundtrack to any relationship of love. If you are in love, have been in love; want to be in love, love the idea of love, Miss Kokoh’s album is what you need.

Fire burning in the fireplace on a winter’s night, a bubble bath for two, a romantic picnic; whatever your pleasure or favorite thing to do with the one you love, make it a threesome. You, the one you love, and Kokoh’s “Meltdown”. A perfect fit.
