ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
TORONTO – Dynamic bass /voice duo George Koller and Julie Michels have performed together for 17 years and invite you to celebrate the release of their second CD“Bass and Voice”.
Born in Edmonton, George Koller is a bassist, cellist, sitar player, pianist, guitarist, sarode player, mandolin player, diruba player, vocalist and producer who has accumulated hundreds of widely diverse performing and recording credits in his expansive musical career working with The Shuffle Demons, Phil Woods, Peter Gabriel, Loreena McKennitt, Bruce Cockburn, Holly Cole, Ian Tyson, and many, many others. Recognized primarily as a bass player, George plays a variety of instruments; many featured on his award-winning solo CD, Music for Plants, Animals, and Humans. He has performance and/or producer credits on over 500 CDs. Most recently he helped produce “World Jazz for Haiti” with Number 9 studios and continues to perform and produce concerts and recordings in the jazz, world and Indian Classical music styles.

Julie Michels is a woman with a beautiful voice! She plays with sound and time in a way that defies categorization. She sings everything and anything that catches her ear from jazz standards, rhythm and blues, Brazilian sambas to African chanting and has played with a variety of performers including; Ottawa’s Chelsea Bridge, Kevin Barrett and her bands Sutra and Parlay at many at many popular jazz venues and festivals. She has released several records including the soundtrack for “Pivoting Echos” (a series of pieces written by Julie, George and Kristian Alexandrov for the Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, one of Canada’s premier dance companies). Julie also does coaching and master classes in Toronto.

Julie Michels and George Koller met in 1994 and found a shared passion for classic jazz, instant composition, and positive vibrations performing as a bass/ voice duo. Their debut CD “Singing Naked” unveiled a warm, dynamic sound -spacious and soulful. An original approach that fused their musicality as performers/composers. A list of their World touring credits or name-dropping in their professional associations would fill a volume. Having played many festivals and large halls, Koller/Michels also enjoy the intimacy of jazz and folk clubs, where they have a history of going out on a limb, as new and old songs are recomposed, revealed, and delivered with a true now-moment jazz passion!
16 years after the first CD was released, the long awaited follow-up CD has finally arrived "Bass and Voice" is a selection of 14 songs that are pure magic! From Miles Davis ‘All Blues’ to’ Love Hurts’ to Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and the dramatic ‘Send In The Clowns’ it’s full of bluesy, soulful, spacious jazz. The CD was produced by Jonathan Goldsmith and Recorded at The Glenn Gould Studio.

"...these are terrific musicians... but it's their unconventionality
that makes them such a winning combination. Their performances
tend to be larger than life" Mark Miller, Globe and Mail

"Repertoire and musicianship was first class...a wonderful
evening of music" Jacques Emond, director, Ottawa Jazz Festival

"Risky, imaginative,
fresh, and fun loving" Roger Levesque, Edmonton Journal

"These true originals, big voice and big bass, make marvelous music
from their exotic risk-taking... Koller thrusts and emotes all over his bass,
conversing flexibly with Michels' power pipes....this bold, entertaining duo
is ready to charge in any direction... Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star

"George Koller and Julie Michels have spirit- wonderful big-hearted spirit.
...Michels is a startling new voice, hugely powerful yet completely
controlled. Fearless, too" Mark Miller, Globe and Mail, CD review

"A wonderfully freeing and devilish album from local jazz deviants
Koller and Michels, shaking the cobwebs out of conventional standards
and bouncing their improv around with terrific zing-bang energy"
CD review, Now Magazine

"Voice and bass alone is a most unusual combination, but Michels and Koller
made it so complete that there was no need for any other instrument. Michels
possesses a huge voice with amazing control, both in range of volume,
expression and wonderful tonal effects which she uses like an instrument...
Kollers' incredible skills on the bass, combined with his imaginative
accompaniments held the audience in awe" Bob Scott, The Examiner
