Album Notes
Konarak Reddy is renowned for his finger-style playing, as well as for integrating Hindustani and Carnatic styles of improvisation into his guitar technique. He has been performing and innovating in India and abroad since the early 70’s.

Konarak first studied western classical theory on guitar, and then became proficient on the sarod that he studied with Gurus Debi Prasad Ghosh and Rajeev Taranath. His much talked about pulling technique on guitar and his beautiful alaaps come from his skill on the sarod. He went on to study jazz improvization at Berklee College of Music and graduated with Honours from the Guitar Performance program at Musician's Institute, Hollywood. His teachers have included such great guitarists as Joe Diorio, Scott Henderson and Peter Sprague. A somewhat surprising fact about Konarak â€" he is an amazing rhythm guitarist with a wrist and technique that has gathered him a large rock following in India.

His has performed and toured with a range of musicians including Peter Finger, Dr.L.Subramaniam, Earl Klugh, Al Jareau, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Ravi Coltrane, George Laval, Maynard Fergusson, Embryo, Orexis, T.A.S.Mani and Rama Mani, Flute Ramani, Rajeev Devasthali, Debi Prasad Ghosh, Vemu Mukunda, Shanti Rao, Neela Ramanujam, Suma Sudhindra, Afro-Brazil, Lady Dee and Banda Esmeralda amongst others.

In 1974, he pioneered "YALI", one of the first jazz-fusion concerts in India. This was followed by "MOONBEAM MAYA" in 1976. Now he organizes and curates the annual non-sponsored music festival BHOOMI JATHRE (Earth Festival).

Konarak has composed and recorded music for several award winning feature films including Devarakadu, Paper Boats and Somewhere In Between. He has also composed music for live performance including for international choreographers Tripura Kashyap and Tillotma Koshy and for the theatre production “In the Hour of God”.

Tamara Turner, CD Baby

Bringing together the entrancing beat of tabla with ambient, liquid backdrops and the definitive warmth of acoustic fingerstyle guitar, showcasing an impressive agility to speak from Eastern melodic vocabularies as well as harness western, "new age" ones, Konarak Reddy builds a stunning texture and atmosphere straddling many genres and tastes. While his technique has gained him a large rock following in India, and while this pioneer has performed and toured with a range of musicians including Earl Klugh, Al Jarreau, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Ravi Coltrane and many others, his album, "Solar Avatar" is a humble, gentle experience that easily melts the mind of preconceptions. Delving deeply into a rich musical background, his album draws from many realms, including jazz, but the overall effect is one of balance, integration and earthy stability. This is an ideal disc for inward times.
