Album Notes
Notes on 'Lay it Down'

Last fall, I attended a vigil held to raise awareness about anti-gay bullying. After that night, I realized that I was embarrassingly naive about how difficult it is to be gay. I am so grateful to the kids I met that night for their patience, for their courage, for their willingness to tell us how it feels to walk in their shoes, and for opening my eyes. To you, my lofty young friends, I am truly thankful.

After this experience, a string of new songs soon followed… 'Moving On,' is about empowerment and the rejection of unfair judgement. 'Lay it Down,' is about finding humanity in each other and taking on and sharing someone else's burden. And 'Sky,' is about knowing that you always have a place to call home.

Maybe it was my strong mid-western parents and their strict and loving upbringing, maybe it's been the friends that I've made along the way, maybe it's my amazing husband and family, I'm not sure, but I do know that I want everyone to feel as loved, valued and at peace as I do.

This space is where I wanted to share a profound quote about how we need to love and respect each other. I spent a lot of time looking for the right words. I wanted something powerful, yet simple and efficient. As I was looking, it dawned on me:

It's time for us to start being good to one another.

It's not fancy language, or beautiful poetry, but it's true. So let's go for it. Let's be good to each other. We might even like it, and we might even make a difference…and really, what's the worst that could happen?

Peace and love to you,
