PRESS RELEASE:

KRISTEN TOEDTMAN RELEASES DEBUT CD OF "SLOW-BURNING" SOUL ENTITLED "THE FALL"

January 1, 2010 (Los Angeles, California) -- LA Singer and member of the Baltimore Afrobeat Society and The Brendan Hines band Kristen Toedtman releases her debut CD on her own, I Say Tedman Records. A kick-back to vintage soul with country twists and strong, witty lyrics, the 8 songs on The Fall are all original, save for a new arrangement of the spiritual, Precious Lord, Take my Hand. All other words and lyrics by Kristen Toedtman except for one song, penned by actor Brendan Hines and Al Sgro of Answer Productions and The Chalet Studio and played by Toedtman on ukulele. Hands down, the stand out feature is her powerful voice, described as "compelling," "devastating" and "like champagne with chocolate."

On December 21st, Kristen and her 8-piece band celebrated the coming release with a show at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles for fans & friends. They will continue to promote with live shows in Los Angeles in the coming months. CDs are available for purchase on the artist's website www.kristentoedtman.com and are coming soon to stores (Store Date tba), cdBaby and iTunes. In addition, Kristen is offering mp3s for free download from her site, rotating the songs available in an effort to spread the music as easily as possible.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Kristen Toedtman comes to Los Angeles from Baltimore where she finished her studies in classical singing and cut her teeth in the Free-Improvising scene (playing piano & violin) as well as being a founding member of the Baltimore Afrobeat Society. She came west in 2003 to compose music for a play by Robert Anton Wilson and stayed, supported by her classical music endeavors (she is a member of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, performing frequently at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and Hollywood Bowl; and early music group The Concord Ensemble). Citing influences like Bill Withers, Cat Power and Peggy Lee, Kristen's sound is fresh with vintage overtones.

Strong, soulful music
I'm a classical composer who has written music for Kristen, and what strikes me most about "The Fall" is the fact that she imbues her songs with the same warmth and depth of feeling that she brought to mine. Kristen is less an artist with a dual classical/pop career than one capable of expressing herself in an authentic, personal way regardless of idiom. The songs on "The Fall" manage to be at once mellow and urgent, languid and filled with longing. I second Abby Mott's props for "Wrong Time of Year" -- a great song, pure and simple. There is a beautiful flow to the whole album, and it deserves to be bought and listened to as such.

Great Gospel Soul
Kristen Toedtman is a name to remember. She has created a great album of soulful gospel music. It is an amazing record that will take you on a wonderful journey. If you like Sheryl Crow and Aimee Mann you will love Kristen Toedtman. You will not be disappointed if you buy this cd.

Brilliant
Kristen Toedtman's "The Fall" will not disappoint! It's distinctly nostalgic vibe and focus on stellar vocals remind me of a favorite mixed tape I had in college (it featured Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, The Jackson Five, Janis Joplin, and Carole King). This collection of songs is guaranteed to thump you in the chest. Toedtman's vocal performance is at once soulful, pure, relaxed, and intense. Toedtman's vast influences come through as she brings the arrangements from a trio of delicate voice, bells, and eukelele to full-on orchestration from one song to the next. My personal favorite has got to be "Wrong Time of Year" for it's unshakeable hooks, perfect backups, and clever lyrics. Her arrangement of walking chords, backup vocals, organ, booming bass drum, and piano will have you striving to figure out where you've felt this huge bittersweet feeling before.
