Album Notes
Bitter Almonds is an album about the human condition. A little bitter and dark on first taste, it hits you with a playful aftertaste of sweet, though tacit, optimism. It is Post-Rock. Post-Folk. Post-Jazz. Liminal music – a Borderland, with a delightful balance of structure and improvisation. An aching intimacy in the voice, that feels at once timeless and modern, tender and fierce, intimate and audacious, over arrangements that are both austere and lush. It gives the listener the sensation of a quiet rooftop, city streets stretching in all directions as far as the eye can see.

The music here is literary and lyrical. In the song cycle an intricate personal mythology is constructed—populated by strangers, lovers, and legendary figures from Balkan and Byzantine history and storytelling—around themes of love and loss, sex and death. In a landscape of memory that does downtown New York, swings through a half-imagined American South, and reaches back to the folks and songs of a shared Old Country.
