ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Liner Notes:

Raag Jaijaivanti is a versatile raga within Hindustani Classical Music that can express many moods or appear to belong to different thaats depending on the emphasis given to certain notes. In Carnatic Music it is known as Ragam Dvajavanti. The vadi is re and the samvadi is pa.

The structure of Jaijaivanti is as follows.

Aarohana:
R g R S, R G’, M P D P, N S
Avarohana:
S n D P, D M G R, R g R S

The beenkar style belongs to the Dhrupad tradition within Hindustani music. It is based on the capabilities of the veena, an instrument that can most aptly mimic the human voice. As the veena originated in South India, Ustad K. Sridhar’s training makes him uniquely adept at bringing its sensibility to the Sarod which is a complex instrument known to produce a wide variety of tonation.

In this rendition he has given Jaijaivanti a haunting quality…..like a memory that returns in quiet moments or a name of the Divine that repeats in the mind. Jai Hanuman: servant of Ram, rescuer of Sita, destroyer of Ravana!
